Nearly EVERY antivirus has had some sort of crap slip in, data breech, you name it, at some point or another. Shit happens in life sometimes. Only one argument is enough : Some days ago, even Piriform announced the Ccleaner has been infected with malware directly on their servers . It happened after a research of the guys from Cisco . Ccleaner is a part of Avast since about two months ! In the communicate, Piriform said that Avast investigated the incident so it is supposing they have known about it with some time earlier than other security firms. In the day when Piriform announced the harm, Avast engine has not detected the threat. Nowadays, most of anti viruses are cloud based so there isn't any excuse about that : Also, I know other " great " experiences with Avast !
