Windows 10 Fall Creators Update: Removed Features

Microsoft plans to release the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, the next feature update for Windows 10 in a couple of months.

The Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 will introduce new functionality but also remove some that was available in previous versions of the operating system.

Microsoft published a Support article that highlights removed or deprecated features in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

The difference between removed and deprecated is the following: removed features are no longer available in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Deprecated features on the other hand are not in active development at the point in time and likely to be removed in future updates. They are still available in the new version of Windows 10 however.

Microsoft plans to remove or block popular or long standing features in the Fall Creators Update for Windows 10. Most notable are probably the removal of the classic Paint application, the blocking of EMET, and the deprecation of the screen saver functionality.

Paint has been the default image editor on Windows for a long time. Microsoft launched Paint 3D in the Windows 10 Creators Update, and seems to have made the decision to remove legacy Paint from the Fall Creators Update.

Microsoft EMET will be blocked in the Windows 10 Fall Creators update, and Microsoft suggests that users configure the new Exploit Protection feature of Windows Defender instead.

Feature Removed Deprecated Notes
3D Builder app X    3D Builder still available in Windows Store. Consider using Print 3D and Paint 3D instead.
Apndatabase.xml X
Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) X   Use of Microsoft EMET will be blocked. Microsoft suggests to use Exploit Protection of Windows Defender Exploit Guard instead.
IIS 6 Management Compatibility   X  Use of alternative scripting tools and newer management console
IIS Digest Authentication   X Use of alternative authentication methods
Microsoft Paint   X Use Paint 3D instead.
Outlook Express X   Use Mail application.

RSA/AES Encryption for IIS   X Use of CNG encryption provider.
Sync Your Settings
Back-end changes

Screen saver functionality in Themes X X Removed in themes in this release, deprecated in Group Policy, Control Panel and Sysprep but functional for the time being.
Syskey.exe X   Syskey.exe is no longer secure. Microsoft recommends to use Bitlocker instead.
System Image Backup (SIB) Solution   X Microsoft recommends the use of third-party backup solutions, but does not name any

i wish they remove that bloatware they made to hard to get rid off like candy crash, minecraft etc from windows 10 start..... with that sort of obnoxious attitude it's no wonder people hate win10.

hopefully the EU will sue them eventually to tone that shit down  this below is the basis for my statement.

There always 3 List  on to a new version of windows 10..1.There is the list of stuff they remove witch is not a bowl of Cheerios always, because sometimes it causes compatibility problems with some legacy applications from changing stuff around  .... 2. Then there the list of stuff they promised too give windows 10 users that they don't get ..3. Then there is the list of new stuff they put in Windows 10 witch makes it more bloated of things people really don't need.  :)

Windows every since after windows 7 has become bloatware  they 1st put that store in windows 8 and still they not sold anything in it yet.. it's about as dead as windows phone  only thing different is it still get updates . Always reinstalling windows is pain too me having remove all those useless modern apps that they make better legacy apps of that work better and actually have cracks too the ones that's not free.

This idea of  the "convergence" experience to enable its smartphones to act as a PC or PC to  act as a smartphone has failed time and time again . 1. it fail for Steve Ballmer when he made windows 8 it was like the worse selling desktop ever made even though it was not the  worse one ever made .. (Microsoft is in it for profit)   2. then it fail Microsoft when they made Windows phones even worse , 3. It also failed Canonical so they stop making Ubuntu phones. 4. Windows 10 was free upgrade for the 1st year and i think you can still actvate Windows 10 for free upgrade if you have a old windows key. So most of it's users didn't pay for it  unless they bought a new PC in the last 2 years . And still Satya Nadella is holding on to this broken dream of a  convergence OS  that has always failed .   :)

One of the features that was cancelled in Redstone 3  was Timeline witch has to do with  convergence with other devices ..

You're always one release behind getting somethings they promised this release will have My People witch was promised in Redstone 2.

Some welcome changes. But, I do not think the high and mighty Microsoft should be making many radical decisions ever so frequently.

Sure we need to progress the technology, and things have gotten really stale for a long while, getting stuck with old technology, as shown in the recently posted Google/TCPIP article Batu69 has posted (thank you for the articles, as always). But they seem to be moving too fast and enforcing new rules too often. I think the best way would be to spread knowledge, offer alternatives, and ultimately, give the end user the final choice, after all, they actually do OWN the device the OS is running on, not Microsoft.

Windows 10 is a mixed bag for me. Microsoft has made some bad decisions with their latest Windows iterations that discourages me from "upgrading". Maybe if they remove the dreaded spy features, and made the OS more platform specific, things could be a lot different.

I am all for a good cross platform experience, but MS seems to be missing a lot in that regard, despite their deadly dedication to go in that direction. A PC is a PC, a phone is a phone. It is stupid (IMHO) to waste PC's  powers to make it identical to a phone.

Most of what they have done could have been done a lot better. Had they acted out their plan in a smart way, I think Windows could have been a real competitor in the mobile field.

The Fall Creators Update for Windows 10 will be released in the coming weeks, and Microsoft promises it will include new features not only for creatives, but improvements to accessibility, security, and UI as well. Unfortunately, there are several existing features of the operating system that will be getting removed or deprecated with the update. Most of them are aging and no longer being developed, or they’re being folded into other tools and applications.

Microsoft has published a support document that outlines the features being removed, allowing users to plan for the changes. Those listed as being deprecated are features no longer in development or supported, and will be removed at some point in a future release. Those listed as removed will no longer be available after the Fall Creators Update is installed.

First on the list to be removed is the 3D Builder app, an understandable cut since its capabilities are now included in Paint 3D and Print 3D, both of which come with Windows 10. Similarly the Reader app and Reading List are on the chopping block as their functionality is built into the Edge browser. Outlook Express is getting cut since it contains non-functional legacy code, and the functions of the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) are now found in Windows Defender Exploit Guard.

On the list to be deprecated are also features that most users won’t miss, or can be found in other tools. This includes Microsoft Paint, the long-standing creation app that’s ready to bow out to Paint 3D, as well as Sync Your Settings, a feature that will be replaced in a future release with a new cloud storage system. Lastly is System Image Backup (SIB), a feature that’s already been deprecated for some time. Instead Microsoft recommends finding a third-party solution for users still in need of system image backups, and in general it seems like a move to push users to backup their important documents to the cloud.

Read, only if you dig W10 (or hold your keyboard-fingers ;)), on this spot.

I won't miss any of those, so no big deal.

One question though, if you already used SIB can you still use the restore in the upcoming update.

The way that Microsoft is driving Windows 10, it will never be stable, never be mature, and users will never have the OS control they had with earlier versions.

IMO, three good reasons to avoid it like the proverbial plague.

Ol' Pimphand

MS has always been excellent at dropping support on a dime. I liked system image backup, it worked well and was free. Installing more 3rd party apps to replace included apps that work perfectly fine doesn't really solve anything.

I wonder if you could save it or make a backup of it?

The classic paint is very useful for quick edits and resolution change, also for pasting screenshots taken by the PrtSc button.

Windows 10 guide...

1 Install the OS and make a local account.

2 Get some extra tools to uninstall stuff you don't want.

3 Get some extra tools to disable stuff you don't want.

4 Tweak the registry to change some values you can't change any other way.

5 Some Group Policy tweaks might also be needed.

6 Temper with hosts file or firewall to block some stuff

7 Enjoy the OS and never update.

And if you choose to update anyway, then this additional step is needed...

8. Spend money to replace your perfectly good hardware whenever Microsoft ends its Windows 10 support.
