It's not yet known if the woman was charging the iPhone with the original charger or not

If you’re reading this article on an iPhone, you'd better read fast because you never know what’s going to happen. An iPhone 7 Plus caught fire in the middle of the night while charging, with the owner sleeping only a few inches away from the device.

While sleeping with the phone close to the head is not a recommended thing to do because of all the radiations, you now have another reason not to do it: the device could go boom and cause severe injuries.

The Chinese owner of the iPhone 7 Plus explained she purchased the device in March, so it was barely one month old when it exploded.

The woman, who only wanted to share her surname Chen, explained that she was sleeping in her home in Nanjing with the iPhone charging on a pillow right next to her. She was woken up at approximately 2 am because of what she describes as cracking sounds, so naturally, the first thing she did was to have a look at the device.

The iPhone was emitting smoke, so she tried to throw it to the ground to reduce the risk of a fire and injuries, before noticing that the device caught fire and burned for approximately 3 minutes. Although no injuries were reported, Chen says the iPhone is completely ruined and pictures of the aftermath show the body melted in the place where the battery typically resides.

iPhones? Never again

Chen explains that she already took the broken iPhone to the retailer and an investigation already started, though a refund would only be issued when the cause of the incident is determined. It’s not yet clear if Apple already got in touch or not, but as it usually happens with such incidents involving iPhones, very little is known about Apple’s involvement and the outcome of the investigations.

On the other hand, Chen says she no longer wants an iPhone unless Apple can guarantee that devices can’t burst into flames.

“Even if they decide to give me a brand-new iPhone, I won’t accept it until they can provide guarantees that something like this won’t happen again,” she was quoted as saying.

A statement from Apple is not yet available and there’s a good chance the company will remain tight-lipped on this case and everything regarding overheating iPhones.

No device manufacturer will guarantee that Li-Ion battery will not explode, catch on fire or get struck by lightning. Even Old Li-ions had same issues...Because of the amount of phones and stuff used today this is hard to control. Especially if devices are made in country where laws don't exist or apply to few people.

Was that a real iPhone or a Chinese knock off?  Can the Chinese make knock offs of products produced in China to begin with?  And why not.

The Sun

RIGHT BIAS

These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward conservative causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. They may utilize strong loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes), publish misleading reports and omit reporting of information that may damage conservative causes. Some sources in this category may be untrustworthy. See all Right Bias sources.

Factual Reporting: MIXED

Notes: The Sun is a daily tabloid newspaper published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. As a broadsheet, it was founded in 1964 as a successor to the Daily Herald; it became a tabloid in 1969 after it was purchased by its current owners. It is published by the News Group Newspapers division of News UK, itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.  Bottom line is this tabloid reports trashy ridiculous stories with a right wing bias.

The China Mobile version of the iPhone 6 supports the WCDMA variant of the UMTS standard on the same frequencies as the other models and the same FDD-LTE and TD-LTE bands as the "global" devices, but UMTS and FDD-LTE formally are "only for international roaming" rather than for use within mainland China.

For complete details regarding LTE support, it will be necessary to check with specific carrier(s) in a particular location.

They can cut comers making things for china and they  dont even have too be up too  the FCC standard even. There made up to the Chinese Governments standard were there more worried about you not being able too call outside of China  than you're safety . :)

When Apple researched it before when it happen on IPhone 6 in china  they said

Apple responded and stated that it has analyzed the affected iPhone 6 units and determined that the fires were caused by “external physical damage.” The company also instructed customers to visit an Apple store or contact company support if they experience any issues with their iPhones.

“We appreciate that customers are more concerned than ever about the performance and safety of batteries in their mobile devices,” an Apple statement reads.

What ever it is,  it seems too be a Chinese problem that is not even IPhone 7 specific.

Browsing youtube etc or playing at night while still plugged at charging so that it won't get battery empty.

But then you fall asleep, screen remains on because of the youtube or game while continuing charging for hours thus the phone overheats.

What did they expect?!

I never charge the phone when I'm already at bed.
