It seems as though the two top console makers are content with extending this generation with higher performing machines to usher in 4K gaming on big-screen TVs. Sony delivered the PlayStation 4 Pro in late 2016, and Microsoft will do the same later this year with Project Scorpio — the follow-up to the Xbox One S.

The latest rumblings surrounding Project Scorpio are that Microsoft will highlight three upcoming games that will take full advantage of the 4K capabilities of the upcoming console. Those games include Forza Motorsport 7, Star Wars: Battlefront 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is arguably the most anticipated of those three games. It was officially announced in mid-October and is targeted for a Fall 2017 release — that makes it a perfect target for Project Scorpio.

According to Windows Central, it received leaked marketing materials which suggest that these three games will be able to fully exploit the 6-teraflop computing power of Project Scorpio and are “True-4K” enabled. But those aren’t the only 4K enabled games that are on the way; the next title in the Call of Duty franchise, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, FIFA and Madden will also be along for the ride.

Besides the 6 TFLOPs of compute performance, we also know that Project Scorpio will support both 4K encoding (for Game DVR) and 4K decoding (for 4K streaming services like Amazon Video and Netflix). The console's Game DVR will also supports 4K resolutions at up to 60 fps. Additionally, Project Scorpio has some special performance enhancements for those with 1080p televisions, and will support Shader Model 6 and dynamic scaling to eke out even more performance.
