You can’t buy Congress’ web history — stop trying

That’s not how any of this works

On the heels of Congress’ recent rollback of the FCC’s privacy rules, some web-goers had a clever idea: why not buy Congress’ web history?

The privacy rules were set to protect against service providers like Comcast and Verizon using customer web-browsing data for marketing purposes. Now that the rules are gone, there’s nothing stopping those providers from using your browsing data for targeted advertising.

The move has enraged web privacy advocates, and a new crop of GoFundMe campaigns (including one campaign launched by Supernatural star Misha Collins) has seized on an unexpected method of revenge: buying politicians’ web histories one by one and publishing them for all to see. One campaign describes it this way:

Quote

Thanks to the Senate for passing S.J.Res 34 , now your Internet history can be bought.

I plan on purchasing the Internet histories of all legislators, congressmen, executives, and their families and make them easily searchable at searchinternethistory.com.

Everything from their medical, pornographic, to their financial and infidelity.

Anything they have looked at, searched for, or visited on the Internet will now be available for everyone to comb through.

Help me raise money to buy the histories of those who took away your right to privacy for just thousands of dollars from telephone and ISPs. Your private data will be bought and sold to marketing companies, law enforcement.

Let's turn the tables. Let's buy THEIR history and make it available.

To be clear, you can’t do this. Just because carriers are allowed to market against data doesn’t mean they’re allowed to sell individual web histories. The campaigns seem well-intentioned, but that’s just not how it works.

In fact, what the campaigns describe would be illegal no matter what the FCC does. The Telecommunications Act explicitly prohibits the sharing of “individually identifiable” customer information except under very specific circumstances. It’s much more permissive when it comes to “aggregate” customer information, which is where things get squishier and the FCC rules become more important. We could argue all day about whether a targeted ad is individually identifiable or not, but if you’re paying Verizon to find out which sites Paul Ryan visited last month, that’s pretty clearly individual information, and pretty clearly illegal to sell. If you want to get really clever, the Wiretap Act also makes it illegal to divulge the contents of electronic communications without the parties’ consent, which arguably includes browsing history.

But we don’t even need to get that far, because even if it weren’t illegal, carriers would never offer a service that unmasked all the gross and horrible things their customers do online. Targeted ads can be creepy, but they’re not that creepy, and every major network has robust safeguards in place to prevent you from working back to a single person’s web history.

None of this means that the recent privacy rollback isn’t a problem. It really will encourage more data collection and more aggressive ad targeting by service providers, and leave customers with few ways to escape. Aggregate data can still be invasive, as modern web advertising demonstrates over and over. It’s a fight worth having! But that’s a far cry from buying individual web histories.

In the meantime, the two biggest campaigns have collectively raised nearly $140,000 for the purchase of web histories that will never go up for sale. It’s anyone’s guess where the money will end up.

I am of the impression that the hactivist group "anonymous" will be publishing just such info very soon! When they do it will be a very :sun: day!

I bet we see a lot of searches for "twink", "pre-teen" and the like! Some heads will roll, thats for sure!

Why are you telling me  ? Start you're own topic if some hackers do this. FYI anonymous witch could be anyone posing under this name  don't have there full web browsing info only the isp  has it and if they hacked in and stole congress data that would be a data breech and many more of them may just end up in jail like before and they could be stealing you're web browsing data too . If they are good enough too do this. Anonymous has never been the same every since :

Quote

On January 19, 2012, the U.S. Department of Justice shut down the file-sharing site Megaupload on allegations of copyright infringement. Anons responded with a wave of DDoS attacks on U.S. government and copyright organizations, shutting down the sites for the RIAA, MPAA

Many of them got caught and work as snitches for the FBI . So when you  say Anonymous it could be a grasser or a FBI Agent . or just some revenge hackers from another group .Be careful who you talk too and deal with that calls themselves this they could be trying too get you in legal trouble are they could be out too hack you and take what you have.

Nothing Anonymous did ever has change anything for the good. If you are not solving the problem  you're just adding too it . Hackers cause the Government to want too ban VPNs and pass real laws too take away privacy not overblown turds like this repeal . It's not all about terrorism you know? Hackers have stole billions of dollars and too the rich this is just as  bad as killing them.

It's not Anonymous style to steal data no way  only group that did were fakes when another group  .or hacker claims affiliation there just trying too ride off the real  Anonymous name.witch are known for doing DDoS attacks.

Quote

In 2015, a group that claims affiliation with Anonymous group, calling themselves as AnonSec, claimed to have hacked and gathered almost 276 GB of data from NASA servers

What you say is off topic it has nothing to do with privacy geeks trying to buy data legally when its illegal for a ISP to sell them you're data as a person . It just shows how naive people are and dont know the truth or the law.

There's more ways to skin a cat than get the mods involved there busy taking care of real problems. :P

I dont care if you quote me as long as  you're asking me something  . But i have been reported just for answering someone who went off topic back and the mods deleted our post . But since i started  the topic I really dont care if you go off topic . Is there any rules in the guidelines saying we cant? Not sure  I will have too look it up.

No  it's not my eyes its  as annoying  as fudge . When I start a topic and people quote  the op and i have put people on ignore before for bugging me and i will do it again if they want too troll me . Don't kill the messenger I just post the news I didn't write it there is no need to quote me like I did.  It's not you bro so dont get me wrong it's just some members here went overboard with it and day after day  month after month it gets old and causes some of us to not want to contribute the news .
