CrAKeN Posted March 27, 2017 Share Posted March 27, 2017 Windows 10 is a free upgrade for users of assistive tech Microsoft ended the free upgrade promo for Windows 7 and 8.1 users that allowed them to install Windows 10 at no cost in July 2016, but the company left the door open for users of accessibility features. Basically, Microsoft says that those who relied on assistive technologies to use their computers needed more time to complete the upgrade to Windows 10, so the company provided them with this method to install the latest operating system free of charge should they were using Windows 7 or 8.1. But even though Microsoft originally promised to block this free upgrade system shortly after the July 2016 target, the very same method continues to work these days, making it possible for users on Windows 7 and 8.1 to still be able to upgrade to Windows 10 free of charge. And the funny thing is that it works just like before and it doesn’t perform any checks, meaning that you don’t have to actually use assistive tech to get Windows 10 without paying. No plans to remove it just yet Microsoft says on the page that it still doesn’t have a target date for pulling this upgrade system, and with the Creators Update just around the corner, the number of Windows 7 and 8.1 users turning to this trick to install Windows 10 is likely to grow. “We have not announced an end date of the upgrade offer for customers using assistive technology. We will make a public announcement prior to ending the offer. We are not restricting the upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies. If you use assistive technology on Windows, you are eligible for the upgrade offer,” Microsoft says. There are people out there who believe that Microsoft keeps the upgrade offer valid on purpose in order to give users an easy way to install Windows 10 and boost adoption of the operating system. At first glance, this perfectly makes sense, as Windows 10 is still far behind Windows 7 at approximately 24 percent market share and growing at a slow pace.
