Robot police were once sci-fi fantasy, but soon the real thing will be patrolling the streets of Dubai.

While the original RoboCop from the 1987 film, a superhuman cyborg law enforcer, could hunt down murderous criminals, the real-life version will be tackling more straightforward misdemeanours.

The first robot police officer will be on patrol in the wealthy United Arab Emirates city by May this year, Dubai Police have confirmed.

Members of the public will be able to report crimes to the multilingual police robot using a touchscreen on its chest.

The friendly robot, which can salute and shake hands, can also be used by members of the public to pay traffic fines and submit paperwork.

Dubai Police, who unveiled the prototype at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition last year, want 25 per cent of its force to be robots by 2030.

The future of the police?

Brigadier Abdullah Bin Sultan told Gulf News: “We are looking to have more robots in the future to handle policing.

“By 2030, we are keen to make robots around 25 per cent of the total police force.”

Jeff Bezos looks a little too happy piloting a giant mechanical robot

Add this to the growing pile of evidence the world is slowly transitioning into a sci-fi dystopia: a billionaire entrepreneur with a sideline in building space rockets has been showing off by piloting a 13-foot-tall robot.

Amazon CEO and fifth richest person in the world Jeff Bezos got behind the wheel (well, dual joysticks) of the bot at the retailing giant’s annual robotics conference.

He tweeted out the picture above earlier this morning saying, “I just got to pilot an awesome (and huge) robot thanks to Hankook Mirae Technology.”

Other attendees videoed the event, and Bezos can be seen waving around the robot’s arms and asking:

“Why do I feel so much like Sigourney Weaver?”

Reports that he then told the crowd to “bow down before your new king and master, Metal Jeff” are unsubstantiated.

Bezos was showing the robot off at MARS — an annual, invite-only conference run by Amazon and dedicated to machine learning, home automation, robotics and space exploration.

The robot is the Method-2, and first came to public attention last December when videos and pictures of the bot circulated online.

It’s built by a South Korean company named Hankook Mirae, and if it looks like it stepped straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster (it bears a striking resemblance to the bipedal robots in Avatar) that’s because one of its designers, Vitaly Bulgarov, is a concept artist who’s worked on films like Ghost In the Shell and Transformers 4: Age of Extinction.

This fact and a few others have led some to suggest that the Method-2 is actually an elaborate hoax. (This article from Live Science last December lays out the case.)

Certainly we’ve only seen the bot move its arms and take a few shaky steps, but as this footage shows, the thing itself is very real.

What’s likely is that the Method-2’s mobility is limited.

You can see support chains attached to the bot’s shoulders in the video above (presumably in case it topples over), and although its arms are whizzing around incredibly quickly for their size, there’s no indication they have any strength. From what we’ve seen of the Method-2 so far, it’s basically a very impressive puppet.

Not that this is stopping Bezos from having fun. And who knows, maybe some of Silicon Valley’s other impulsive tech billionaires will get in on the giant robot act too.

Just think: in 50 years’ time we could be hiding in underground bunkers, sucking down our daily Soylent rations, and watching in 4K VR as a cybernetic Jeff Bezos battles Elon Musk’s evil clone in robo-suits equipped with tactical nukes.

It’s quite possibly the future we deserve.

Meet Silicon Samantha: AI sex robot has a functioning G-spot and can switch between 'family' and 'sexy' mode
Samantha was created by engineer Sergi Santos, from Barcelona

Sensors that respond to touch cover the doll's hips, shoulders, vagina and mouth

The sex robot is even capable of 'emotional closeness', according to its inventor

An artificially intelligent sex robot with a fully functioning G-spot has been unveiled.

'Silicon Samantha' is covered in sensors that respond to human touch and can switch between 'family' and 'sexy' mode.

The sex robot also has a functional vagina and mouth, according to its Spanish inventor.

'Silicon Samantha' is covered in sensors that respond to human touch and can switch between 'family' and 'sexy' mode.

Sensors cover the doll's hips, shoulders, vagina and mouth and have been used to create a 'functional' G-spot.

The doll is fitted with artificial intelligence and is even capable of 'emotional closeness', according to its inventor.

The AI bot, which has dark brown hair and piercing green eyes, is even capable of 'emotional closeness', according to engineer Sergi Santos, from Barcelona.

He said: 'Samantha is interactive. Basically she likes to be touched.

'She has different modes of interaction – she has romantic, she has family and she has also sexy modes.'

Sensors cover the doll's hips, shoulders, vagina and mouth.

The robot speaks in an American accent and says sexual phrases such as 'I'm on for you all the time', 'nice and gentle' and 'now then, what's next?'

He added: 'Normally she likes to be kissed always and also she responds to, basically, the G-spot and also the breasts.'

The sex robot switches between 'family' and 'sexy' mode.

'She has a way of interacting, that initially she would like to be romantic, she would like to be family, and you get to a point that she wants to be sexual,' said Mr Santos.

'She can also responds to the hands, so basically the hands are family, the romantic, the hips are family and romantic and basically the spots where she feel sexy would be mouth and the G-spot.

'The objective, the final objective of the sexual mode is to give her an orgasm.'

In February, a sex doll company launched a robotic sex assistant that can form emotional bonds with its users.

Each life-like silicon 'RealDoll' has customised genitalia and interchangeable faces.

Standard dolls, which come with the choice of 18 female body types, or two male figures, start at £5,251 ($6,500) while more specific creations start at an eye-watering £9,693 ($12,000).

The company is set to release their sex assistant app, the Harmony AI app, in April this year and a virtual reality sex system next year.

Matt McMullen, the CEO of RealDoll, told Digital Trends: 'We are developing the Harmony AI system to add a new layer to the relationships people can have with a Realdoll.

'Many of our clients rely on their imaginations to a great degree to impose imagined personalities on their dolls.

'With the Harmony AI, they will be able to actually create these personalities instead of having to imagine them.

'They will be able to talk to their dolls, and the AI will learn about them over time through these interactions, thus creating an alternative form of relationship.'

REALDOLL - THE LIFE-LIKE SEX DOLL

Standard dolls, which come with the choice of 18 female body types, or two male figures, start at $6,500 while more specific creations start at an eye-watering $12,000.

Each doll is anatomically correct, and genitalia, like everything else, can be custom made to a client's preferred specifications.

The figures are even fitted with a hinged jaw, with 'soft, stretchy lips, ultra soft tongue, soft silicone teeth.'

While sex dolls had been produced in Japan since the 1980s, they were made from plastic.

McMullen's RealDoll, on the other hand, was created with a high-grade silicone, which retains heat and allows for a 'more realistic feel and greater elasticity', according to the company's website.

The flexible skeleton also means clients can bend the doll however they like.
