Microsoft Word is now a PDF viewer too

Microsoft has updated Office for Android with a couple of new features after previously releasing them as part of the Office Insider program earlier this month.

The most important change in the new Office version is PDF support in Microsoft Word. Although it’s mostly a document editor, Microsoft Word is capable of handling a long list of file formats, and starting with this version, it’s also a PDF viewer. There are no editing options just yet, but from now on, you don’t need a dedicated app just for PDFs because Word can open them too.

In addition, Microsoft Excel is also getting an update that lets users open files that contain legacy drawing images, with the Redmond-based software giant saying that this has actually been one of the most requested features on Android.

Microsoft is putting a lot of effort into getting Office for Android right and the company rolls out updates for the built-in productivity tools on a regular basis.

Successful Android app

According to information posted in the Google Play Store, Microsoft Word alone has already recorded between 100 million and 500 million installs, which is impressive to say the least for a company whose original focus was Windows.

Microsoft itself, however, says that it’s very committed to investing in Android apps, explaining that this is part of its effort to make its services available to customers who do not necessarily have a Windows device.

“Our company will be pragmatic and embrace other mobile platforms with our productivity services, device management services, and development tools - regardless of a person’s phone choice, we want everyone to be able to experience what Microsoft has to offer them,” Terry Myerson, head of the Windows unit at Microsoft, said last year.

If you want to get the latest version of Microsoft Office for Android, you can get Word, Excel, and PowerPoint here.
