Research firm IDC this afternoon announced that shipments of personal computers worldwide will drop by 7.2% this year, according to the latest update to its forecast, a hair better than a May prediction of a 7.3% decline.

The firm, however, lowered its outlook for 2017 to a drop of 2.1% from what it had previously predicted would be a drop of just 1.6%.

The firm cites better-than-expected Q2 shipments, which were down 4.1%, more than 3 points better than feared. The firm thinks much of that was because of “rebuilding inventory,” which IDC doesn’t think will last.

PCs “are gradually stabilizing,” the firm believes.

Says analyst Loren Loverde, “we still expect shipments to stabilize over the medium term, while market leaders will benefit from further consolidation.”

Factors that have been helping PCs include less intense pressure from tablet computers: “Competition from other devices and longer device life have been the root causes of slower growth, but both are having less impact, opening the way to PC replacements, particularly in the commercial market.”

Adds analyst Linn Huang, regarding the U.S. market, “Although we believe much of the second quarter result was related to a one-off inventory intake, there is still cause for optimism in the second half of this year; We are still ascending towards the peak education and back-to-school buying season, have a Chrome OS that is more ready for consumer primetime than it has ever been, and are anticipating some early Windows 10 transitions in enterprise.”
