Army's Javelin Anti-Tank Missile Blow Stuff Up

Meet the Army's go-to anti-armor weapon system.?

Here's some footage of troopers in the U.S. 2nd

Cavalry Regiment firing Javelin missiles in Estonia.

The video was taken earlier this month after the 2nd

Cavalry's "dragoon ride" through Central Europe into

the Baltics.

The Javelin was originally developed to replace the

mediocre Dragon medium-range anti-tank guided missile.

Dragon was a backbone of U.S. Army infantry anti-tank

defense, but had its limitations: It could penetrate

23 inches of tank armor, had a range of only 1,000

yards, and required the gunner to keep enemy tanks in

the crosshairs until the missile hit.

The Dragon was also slow, requiring 11 seconds to

travel to maximum range—enough time for a tank crew to

notice an incoming missile and spray the gunner's

location with machine gun fire.

Introduced in the late 1990s, Javelin fixed those

problems.

It can penetrate up to 30 inches of armor, has a range

of  2,500 meters, and is a fire-and-forget system.

Javelin's seeker can lock onto a target and then

autonomously guide itself there, allowing the gunner

and his assistant to hightail it ASAP.

By the time a tank notices it's under attack, the

Javelin team is already on the move.

Originally issued to mechanized and light infantry

squads, Javelin will now be fitted to new armored

turrets on the 2nd Cavalry's Stryker interim armored

vehicles.

The U.S. Army, concerned about the brigade's ability

to counter Russian heavy armor, plans to retrofit the

Javelin to roughly half the brigade's Strykers. If

Russian tanks ever roll West, they had better count on

facing a lot of Javelin missiles.
