North Korea may be hacking banks across the world

North Korea, allegedly behind the Sony Pictures cyberattack and more, could be behind a series of bank hacks across the globe resulting in tens of millions of lost dollars. Researchers with Symantec cite a recent trio of attacks that involved rare code seen in both the Sony cyberattack and earlier attacks against companies — including banks — in South Korea and the US. Assuming North Korea is behind the attacks, it would be a worrisome and exceedingly rare instance in which a nation-state is hacking global banks to steal money.

Some of these banks have been especially hard hit. Bangladesh’s central bank, for example, saw hackers steal a massive $81 million. The cybersecurity company Mandiant, which is working with Bangladesh’s bank to investigate the theft, recently told Reuters the responsible hackers are also behind bank thefts throughout SE Asia.

Joining that report is a blog post from Symantec in which it says it has ‘found evidence’ linking that $81 million theft to a different attempt at stealing more than $1 million from Vietnam’s Tien Phong Bank. The researchers go into details about their own analysis, pointing toward the SWIFT payments network and the series of fraudulent transactions being used to steal money from banks. These fraudulent SWIFT transactions also led to Ecuador’s Banco del Austro losing $12 million.

Researchers with Symantec say they’ve found three varieties of malware that have been used in SE Asia bank attacks: Backdoor.Contopee, Backdoor.Fimlis, and Backdoor.Fimlis.B. Some code was shared with Trojan.Banswift, which was used in the attack against the Bangladesh bank, as well. Within in that trojan, researchers found what they say is ‘a distinct file wiping code.’

When looking for other malware with the same control bytes combination, the team was taken back to an early version of the aforementioned malware Backdoor.Contopee, which is tied back to the Bangladesh attack. “Symantec believes … these tools can be attributed to the same group,” the company said.

Backdoor.Contopee, says Symantec, was formerly used by hackers who themselves are “associated” with Lazarus, a collective behind cyberattacks that primarily focus on South Korea and the United States. Lazarus, then, is linked back to Backdoor.Destover, the malware used against Sony Pictures ahead of The Interview’s theatrical release (a movie that mocks the North Korean dictator while simultaneously showing citizens overthrowing the government, in case you’ve forgotten). And, as Symantec points out, the FBI’s investigation lead to them blaming North Korea as the source of the Sony attack.

Speaking to the New York Times, Symantec researcher Eric Chien said: “If you believe North Korea was behind those attacks, then the bank attacks were also the work of North Korea. We’ve never seen an attack where a nation-state has gone in and stolen money."

In light of its research, Symantec has advised that “banks and other financial institutions should remain vigilant." The SWIFT payment system, it should be noted, is used by more than 11,000 organizations and banks around the world.

They will figure it out one day after its too late  , Most of the people who put down America  are strong supporters of American corporations , Like Microsoft , Google  and Facebook  all known Prism actors  they will all be on Windows using Google Chrome talking too there friends on Facebook it makes them nothing more than mere Hippocrates even after Snownden gave them a warning ..

That's one thing i despise  about the internet is all the hate  it's borderline racism and they dont even practice what they preach witch makes what they say meaningless  they just want to point fingers  I dont see them packing up and going to North Korea

if they were there they would even  be on this site talking to us  because North Korea has very limited internet for there normal citizens, How many people have you ever talked too from North Korea?   What i seen about the inside of North Korea was mostly  on Vice  and it dont look like nowhere  i want too live. But there is  people from everywhere who lives in America the great melting pot..  Why dont they move to someplace ruled by a dictator if the dont like America ?  Maybe they do and thats why they side with them. :(

People are dreamers crime goes back  further than money ..This dont stop people from knocking you in the head and taking what  you have ..money it's self is nothing but paper and metals  its what money buys that makes it of any worth ..And people would  still take what you have if they dont have it. :P

Before money people just used what they had as Money and traded with each other witch was just as good as money ...So they going to take what you have too?  its only what you have thats really of any value.  My grandparents and  my descendents back  before them  raised food and livestock  to live . People today thinks money really matters but its what you have that matters most.

yes you're right except for the fact that people are dreamers cuz if it was the case they would imagine a world where your basic need could be taken from granted.

a ferrari is something nobody needs unless you're an ass and need to impress more than anything else the people around you

Well when everyone was still riding  a horse and buggy still the Amish do ..They thought that about cars period , phones ,TV , Muisc etc. If  things were never invented based on some's opinion we still be living in the stone age. If you ask the Amish , what most people take for granted as basic needs lights, cars , the internet , etc. is not basic needs at all. And they live fine without it and most have plenty of money still. People nowadays dont even know the difference in basic needs and just plain out convenience . They try to tell me I need this or that when i really dont . If tech makes you rich then even the really poor is rich compared to the rich in the 19th century  but it dont it what you have that make you rich.

One must be so narrow-minded to compare death of valuable Real scientists and years of Real work with money which can be earned any time....

Please keep political and regional issues out of this guys. This is a security issue, however maybe it's scale, it can have global economic problems and such.

my point is, where is the need to have a car that can go 200+MPH when you are not allowed to drive faster than 75MPH (if we are talking about the usa).
