Mystery Fat Patch KB3150513

There are reports this morning about a new patch, KB 3150513, appearing on Windows 8.1 systems -- and probably lurking on Windows 10 systems, too.

Microsoft has not posted a KB article [update: they now have], and there's no notification about the patch in the official Windows Update list [update: they now have]. Sound familiar?

Fortunately, poster PeterBisco on the Microsoft Answers forum, has an explanation (originally posted on the Polish forum):

I have made a look into Windows8.1 version of this update and found this:

This update doesn't contain binary code. It just contains new data for AppRaiser (Windows 10 Compatibility tool). It contains files as:
• hwcompat_th1.txt
• hwcompat_th2.txt
• hwexclude_rs1.txt
• hwexclude_th1.txt
• hwexclude_th2.txt
• wucompat.txt
• appraiser.sdb
• hwcompat_rs1.txt
• appraiser_data.ini
• appraiser_telemetryrunlist.xml

So if you want to upgrade to Windows 10, and you have all the Windows 10 related updates installed (e.g. KB3035583, KB2952664, etc.) then you are safe to install this patch. If you don't want Windows 10 or its related updates and you have hide them, you can hide this one as well, if you wish.

AppRaiser is the Windows 10 compatibility appraiser, which you can download and run manually. It's the program that's supposed to tell you if you're running any software or have any hardware that will mess with the Windows 10 upgrade.

Hiding this patch sounds like good advice to me.

Comment: An Out-Of-Band important patch, for what shit? Is Microsoft trying to tempt fate with its corporate customer base?  On another front, the notorious KB3035583 appeared again and then disappeared.

Now I see KB3150513, and KB3035583 has disappeared.

Yeah, Windows 10 is terrible. It offers nothing Windows 7 doesn't, it's just years worth of development time dedicated to bloat. I'll never need another OS. Windows 7 forever.

While cruising through the WS Lounge, I ran across a question about KB 3150513, which was showing up unexpectedly on Win7 systems. That prompted me to check Windows Update on my main Win7 test system. I didn't find this particular update, but KB 3035583 was posted on my machine yesterday, May 4. Those of you who follow updates carefully will know that KB 3035583 is the update that puts the "Get Windows 10" icon on your taskbar.

The upshot: It's not enough to simply hide this update. Apparently, Microsoft will keep sending it out. For that reason, I keep GWX Control Panel on that machine.

GWX CP didn't notify me that a new KB 3150513 update had arrived, but it has kept both the Win10 icon off my taskbar and the bulky installation files off my drive. The program gives you a quick way to check that you haven't unintentionally downloaded the full set of install files. The Win10-upgrade folders on my Win7 system are taking up just 491KB of space.

Getting back to KB 3150513, it's yet another Win10-prep patch. According to the update's notes, it'll not show up if KB 2977759, KB 2952664, or KB 2976978 isn't already installed. (All three are previous Win10-compatibility updates.) Looking at my Windows Update, I had unchecked April's KB 2952664, which explains why KB 3150513 did not appear on my system. This suggests that these compatibility updates are not all cumulative.

Bottom line: As with all "Win10-compatibility" patches, KB 3150513 can be ignored if you have no plans to upgrade a Win7 system to Win10.

No  3150513 on my 8.1 either. but 3035583  was there. For me that now makes it 2976978, 3035583, 3044374, 3068708, 3080149, and 3123862.

Windows 10 is NOT terrible. How they are implementing the transition to get everyone TO Windows 10 is terrible. I've had a glitch here and there, but what Windows OS hasn't?
