A 1957 Ferrari 335S Spider Scaglietti car was auctioned for more than 32 million euros, and the auctioneer reported Lionel Messi as the buyer.

Bidding for the world's most expensive Ferrari has turned into a Messi affair.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi reportedly purchased the 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti, which was being auctioned for 32.1 million euros. But he had some competition from a guy who has always been nipping at his heels.

Cristiano Ronaldo also expressed interest in the car, according to Sport.com, but Messi allegedly won the bidding war.

If Messi did in fact win the bid, it would be only the latest victory for the Argentinian footballer, who won international soccer's highest award when he was granted the 2015 Ballon d'Or, finally beating out Ronaldo after consecutive years of placing behind the Portuguese star. Messi received 41.33% of the votes to Ronaldo's 27.76%.

Though the buyer's name has not been officially distributed, a press release from the Proto organization, which is owned by Alessandro Proto and was in charge of the auction, reported it was Messi. Sources close to Messi have rejected the rumors, though, according to Sport.

There's some underlying history between Proto and Ronaldo that dates back to October, when the Real Madrid forward was slated to appear in a biographical flick about the wealthy Italian businessman. But Proto wasn't happy about the possibility of Ronaldo's inclusion overshadowing his own story, so the football star was dropped, according to Gazzetta.

The fact that Proto is naming Messi as the buyer and Ronaldo as a losing bidder seems to be yet another dig at the Portugal team captain.

It's probably a wise decision to keep such a treasured car out of Ronaldo's hands anyway — he crashed and totaled his Ferrari on the way to a practice in 2009.

The athlete appeared to acknowledge the suggestion - or poke fun at it - on his Instagram page as he posted a picture holding a red toy car, with the caption: 'My new car'
