Corporate antivirus performance on Windows 8.1

If the recent antivirus tests that put Microsoft at the top of the security chart have made you believe that MSE and Windows Defender are actually really effective against malware, think twice.

That’s what a new series of tests conducted by German institute AV-TEST suggest, as Microsoft performed the worst when corporate products were put against new malware.

The research included corporate security products tested in September and October 2015, with Bitdefender and Kaspersky Lab again getting the best score with the maximum rating for protection, performance, and usability. Basically, the two security products received 6 points for each of these tests, proving to be extremely effective when it comes to blocking malware, but also as far as performance is concerned.

Trend Micro was next with 6 points for protection and usability, but only 5.5 points for performance, while F-Secure received the top mark for protection, but scored only 5.5 for performance and usability.

Microsoft’s performance

Unfortunately for those who don’t want to turn to third-party security software but only stick to the built-in solutions, Microsoft’s applications are again at the back of the pack, getting the worse score of all tested programs.

Microsoft received only 2.5 points for protection, which means that it blocked less than half of the malware that it was supposed to detect, but also 3.5 points for performance. Usability is where Microsoft’s corporate security products actually excel, so it’s no surprise that the Redmond-based tech giant received 6 out of 6 points here.

Obviously, with Windows 10 now alive and kicking, Microsoft is more focused on improving the security of its new operating system, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that Windows 8.1 solutions will be abandoned. Redmond says security is one of its main concerns, but over the years, this kind of tests have shown just how bad the company’s security products perform against third parties.
