Redmond finally allows activations with Windows 7 keys

Windows 10 Threshold 2 rolled out last week and in addition to several improvements to apps and the operating system itself, it also brings one of the most awaited features since the debut of Microsoft’s new OS.

Threshold 2 finally makes it possible to activate a copy of Windows 10 with a Windows 7 or 8.1 key, which makes the upgrade process easier, especially for IT admins that need to perform this process on tens or hundreds of computers.

Previously, in order to fully activate a copy of Windows 10, users of Windows 7 or 8.1 first had to perform a direct upgrade to the new OS, allow it to be validated by Microsoft and only then do a clean install and start from scratch.

But starting with Threshold 2, doing a clean install is much easier because if you already own a Windows 7 or 8.1 product key, and you want to upgrade, you can simply deploy Windows 10 and then use your license to activate the new copy of the OS. Threshold 2 supports activation with product keys for older Windows versions and according to a discussion on Reddit, everything works really smoothly.

Activation problems

This change is supposed to make it easier for users to upgrade to Windows 10, especially because some were very reluctant to installing the new OS after hearing about the activation problems others have been experiencing.

Back in late July when Microsoft rolled out Windows 10, the activation process failed to work correctly for some users, especially because the number of connections made to Redmond’s servers was overwhelming. What’s more, the correct way to upgrade and activate to Windows 10 wasn’t very clear for everyone, so some performed a clean install from the very beginning and only then found out that they can’t activate unless they upgrade first.

All problems were fixed after a few days, but it’s pretty clear that a more significant improvement was needed, so fortunately, Threshold 2 is here to bring it to everyone.
