But where are her regal hair buns? And where is Luke Skywalker?

  • New characters, old characters and a never-before-seen weapon revealed
  • Luke Skywalker does not seem to be on the poster, sparking intrigue

  • Tickets out on Monday, full trailer screens during Monday Night Football

The poster and final teaser trailer have been released for the latest installment of Star Wars - featuring some old-timers and a few interesting new details.

It marks the first appearance of Carrie Fisher, who returns as Princess Leia, this time without her trademark hair buns.

Notably absent is Luke Skywalker as three new characters - Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron - dominate the poster.

And Twitter users rushed to discuss the appearance of a never-before-seen planet-shaped object which sits in the background. Bearing a striking resemblance to the Death Star, many speculate that it could be a new weapon; possibly a planet destroyer.

The release comes 24 hours before fans can start buying tickets for the highly-anticipated movie, which hits theaters on December 18.

The new poster, which has been hailed as a resounding success, features all of the new characters that have been leaked to the public so far - Daisy Ridley as Rey, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron and John Boyega as Finn.

Ridley, Isaac and Boyega are also the focus of the final teaser trailer, also released on Sunday, which consists of just five short frames.

The full-length trailer will be screened during Monday Night Football on ESPN.

Announcing the impending ticket release, the Star Wars website also listed a number of 'special events' for fans to look forward to come December.

A number of cinemas will be screening back-to-back viewings of all previous six episodes, before eventually unveiling Episode VII. The first six will be in 2D, with The Force Awakens in 3D.

Cinemas are also handing out limited edition artwork and memorabilia; some have a sweep stake for tickets to the world premiere in Los Angeles, California.

Fans took to Twitter to question why Star Wars heavyweight Drew Struzan wasn't picked for the final piece.

Struzan designed the posters for the three most recent episodes, the special edition artworks, and the preview poster for Disney's D23 expo in February.

Instead, the accolade was handed to Star Wars fan Bryan Morton, according to MakingStarWars.net.

I was almost expecting to get "Rick-Rolled". Looking forward to the next episode.
