Windows 10 officially launched on July 29, but the new PC operating system from Microsoft has already managed to claim 5.21% of the total worldwide OS market share for its first full month of release in August. The numbers were revealed today by research firm Net Applications, who monitors stats from tens of thousands of websites.

Windows 10 only had 0.39% of the PC market share for the entire month of July, but now it is in fourth place, ahead of all Linux and Mac versions, according to Net Applications. Windows 7 is still number one with 57.67% in August, but that's a massive drop compared to July where it claimed 60.73%. Windows XP is second in August with 12.14%, up from 11.72% in July. Windows 8.1 was third in August with 11.39%, compared to 13.11% in July.

Microsoft has already announced that Windows 10 has been installed on over 75 million PCs and tablets in the first four weeks since it launched. Most of those installs were for the free upgrade version of the OS for Windows 7 and 8.1 users.
