Vivaldi browser continues to make progress: snapshot 1.0.258.3 released

I have high hopes for the Vivaldi browser. While it is not as complete as other browsers yet -- there is not even a stable version out there at the moment -- it is showing great promise.

What I like particularly is that the team is not just mimicking what popular browsers offer but adding features to the browser that it considers essential or at least important.

It reminds me more of the classic Opera when it comes to features and vision, and that is not a bad thing considering that Opera was one of the most innovative browsers out there before the team started to use Chromium as its main source.

Anyway, three snapshots have been released recently for Vivaldi that improve the browser in many aspects. Some add features to it that it was lacking while others introduce new features to it.

One cool feature of Vivaldi is Tab Tiling which allows you to display multiple web pages in a single browser tab. Firefox users have access to similar functionality if they install Tab Tiles or another add-on that adds the feature to it.

The tab selection process has improved in recent builds. It is now easier and clearer, and the main feature that benefits from that is tab tiling.

The second snapshot improved the address bar behavior of the browser. Vivaldi displays the typed history automatically when the address bar is activated which you can use to open pages with another click and without typing a single letter.

The same build improved the browser's preferences by adding icons to categories. This may seem like a smaller addition but it improves the usability and the looks of the page significantly.

You may remember that Web Panels were integrated into Vivaldi recently. These allow you to display web contents in the browser's sidebar. This new snapshot adds back and reload buttons to all websites added this way so that you can navigate between pages or reload contents to see if it changed.

The most recent snapshot finally improves the browser's cookie management. If you have used the browser before you may remember that the cookies preferences page let you only delete all cookies but not select ones. This changes with today's build as you can now view and delete individual cookies as well in Vivaldi.

Lastly, you may enable a visual help for tab cycling in Vivaldi. To do so open Vivaldi menu > Settings > Tabs, and check "cycle tabs visually" on the page.

Tabs are now displayed as thumbnails in an overlay on the screen indicating exactly which tab gets opened next when you cycle through them. This is especially helpful if you have kept Vivaldi's default used tab cycling order.
