Windows 10 vs. 8.1 vs. 7 Performance Tested, Benchmarked

Three years ago we were benchmarking Microsoft's then latest operating system, Windows 8. At the time we were keen to make sure Windows 8 performed as well as Windows 7, which was a huge upgrade from 2006's Windows Vista.

In the end, we determined that Windows 8 was on par with 7 and at times a fraction faster, leading us to this conclusion in our performance review:

"Looking beyond benchmarks, Windows 8 appears more polished than Windows 7, even if you plan to live on the desktop and aren't too fond of the Start screen, general usage is smoother and appears to be faster on Windows 8, which I found most noticeable on our somewhat underpowered Athlon II X4 system. If anything, it's a great start. Now the Metro/Modern style will have to prove itself as a cross-platform OS that marries desktop, laptop and tablet PCs."

It's obvious now that the 'Metro' Start screen was an epic failure and in my opinion it was the only real issue with Windows 8, as I thoroughly enjoyed using the operating system with Classic Shell installed.

Fortunately, Microsoft learned from its mistakes and addressed some of Windows 8's shortcomings in Windows 10, which we believe is the best version yet, if only for its improved looks and functionality across devices and form factors.

I would like to see a longevity or deterioration test. I wouldn't say fail for windows 10 some games do benefit from it already and both those previous OS's are mature as windows 10 is only 13 days old vs. W7sp1 was released February 22, 2011, W8.1 was released on October 17, 2013 so 2 plus years of maturing and fixing of many problems for both. W10 has great promise if only the spying would stop, but it isn't as for any OS Linux or Mac also have these spying techniques for many different reasons, and all for the same reason Government Mandate.

as expected, not much of a difference compared to a healthy W7x64 system

lol yea healthy because W7 has just like older MS OS's deterioration issues bigtime I remember why I jumped to w8.1 it seems to have longer life span between fresh installs. and WXP was terrible but Vista was worse and so was W98 and WinME and Win95 and lets not talk about Windows 3.1 3.0 etc... Linux still beats all why Mac went to Unix modified OS, a Linux brother lol.

Well at least I am not the only one that plays Starcraft 2. I am so happy that this new stupid O/S broke it and created "lag" from the "unremoveable" XBOX app thats attached to the O/S, even if you don't own an XBOX. You have to execute an administrative powershell command to rid the system of it, and viola ... after reading that article and checking this out myself it works. No shiit .... lmao. W10 .. failing at life since Windows ME. Pathetic excuse for an O/S.

Bad for gamers, lack of customization, nothing but bugs, slower then previous versions. What a 1 or 2% increase in overall perforance compared to W7 or W8.1 .... lmao what a total joke. I hope those hipster scum at Microsoft choke and die. So this is gaming bug #2 for me

GTA V "memory leak" 3.5 GB of RAM and 100% HDD activity from an unknown "system process"

Starcraft 2 lag because of built in XBOX app.

Who needs compatability mode anymore when this fuking operating system breaks the games entirely. Total JOKE!!

On the gaming front, I found strange input lag in StarCraft II. It wasn't hugely noticeable but scrolling and commands took slightly longer than they did in Windows 8.1, just enough that in a competitive game it felt sluggish.

After a quick Google search I found a number of users complaining about the same thing and all sources blamed Windows 10's Xbox application which is built into the OS and cannot be removed via conventional methods.

Despite never running this app or having an Xbox account to actually use it, it appears this was my problem. Fortunately, there's a Powershell command to disable the Xbox app and doing so eliminated the lag, allowing StarCraft II to play like it did on Windows 8.1. It was a disappointing discovery, but I'm glad it was relatively easy to overcome with some help from the Internet.

my installs usually last for years in good shape, unless something catastrophic happens, like an HDD dying. it's more likely that i decide to reinstall windows for other reasons...like rolling back from W10 for instance?

Same here. I've only had faults I would say 2-3 times but that is because I was younger (child/teen) and wasn't fully aware of what I was doing.

Win95 lasted for me quite some time until don't know what I did, but it crashed like hell and had to reformat, at that point I skipped and went to 98SE. Stayed on there perfectly until a friend finally convinced me to change to Windows XP it was SP1 at the time he convinced me to change, so imagine all I skipped out on (Win ME, Win 2000, Win XP until SP1).

Then in XP, I caught a virus (my own fault) that had to reformat, and after that was something else in XP, that caused me to format again. Otherwise its seamless if you know what you are doing. XP is alright but it seems to just "degrade" itself on its own over time, for whatever reason. That code was fixed in VISTA --> on ... well all the way up until W10 where nothing seems to work. I think the most stable out there now are W7 or 8.1 without issues or problems, or lack customization of what an O/S is supposed to do. W10 thinks its a tablet. Sorry W10, a GTX 980 is not a tablet O/S, idiots.
