below is a comment taken from your very same news source...nice to see that yet again the original post was blown all out of proportion for the wow factor by certain conspiracy mongers

Nothing is more amusing, for us in aviation, than watching media blow past research and get things wrong. Like showing a USAF Auxiliary, (Civil Air Patrol) bird, randomly picked from stock images, for an example of this program-which has been anything but a secret since the earth cooled. The media can be counted upon to either ignore good sources or pay 'experts' of questionable veracity, all to get the story out and grab your attention. For the most part, we just sit back and chuckle; editors never read up on this stuff or act on it anyhow...

For the record, yes, the CAP does fly counternarcotics missions for US govt., plus augments NASA mission security, and also flies flood survey, tsunami warning, tornado damage survey, national security, natural disaster and search and rescue, border security and other missions-as it has for over 70 years. But the plane shown at the top is not a civilian registered and flown contract bird; no small distinction; when you see the large CAP and national insignia all over it, it's anything but subtle-which helps readily identify it to ground observers and search parties it often is called upon to guide.

But then again, when it comes to anything related to aviation in a news story, facts and research take a back seat to deadline before headline and maximum 'ooooh' factor for a public whose intelligence has been so thoroughly eroded and insulted by the media's failure to properly inform, that the public itself is ready to gobble up anything as fact.

holy crap guys... think with your brains not the other end of your body... if as you say the USA becomes the police you state you say it will become or is well under way to becoming or is part way there already and nobody has noticed... there is an armed army of civilians out there not to mention how many of them have full training from the american armed forced that would rise up in rebellion ..not to mention the armed and trained paramilitary nut case entities that well documented government haters just "waiting for their time" and the fact that 90 percent of the american population would be rioting in the streets if that government ever did what you say will do or has already begun to be...yes there are issues but the usa is still the most free country in the world and always will be

"The FBI's aviation program is not secret," spokesman Christopher Allen said in a statement. "Specific aircraft and their capabilities are protected for operational security purposes." Allen added that the FBI's planes "are not equipped, designed or used for bulk collection activities or mass surveillance."

Airplanes come and go regardless if there after some criminals . CCTV never goes no were and is used bulk collection activities and mass surveillance. that's the difference. Whether its the FBI or some other agency if there after someone there going to do there job .

Lawmakers Probe FBI’s ‘Disturbing’ Use of Spy Planes

The FBI has reportedly been using planes equipped with high-tech cameras and cell-phone tracking technology.

Members of Congress are demanding that the FBI turn over more information about its use of airplanes to conduct surveillance of Americans.

The FBI is using at least 50 planes to conduct surveillance operations over U.S. cities and rural areas, the Associated Press reported earlier this week. The planes, registered under fake company names, are equipped with high-tech cameras and, in some circumstances, technology that can track thousands of cell phones below.

"In the wake of the president's signature on a surveillance reform law that ends warrantless bulk collection of Americans' phone records, it is highly disturbing that your agency may be doing just that and more with a secret fleet of aircraft engaged in surveillance missions in the United States," 16 lawmakers, including Reps. Suzan DelBene, Zoe Lofgren, and Chris Van Hollen, wrote in a letter Thursday to FBI Director James Comey.

The lawmakers requested that the FBI brief Congress on the legal theories justifying the program, when it seeks warrants, the technologies it uses on the flights, and how it limits spying on innocent Americans.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and Sen. Al Franken sent their own letters this week asking for similar information from the FBI.

In a statement Thursday, the FBI denied that it was collecting any information in bulk or that the program was classified. The bureau said it uses fake company names to protect the security of the operations, and that the Justice Department conducts "rigorous oversight." The flights use cell-phone-tracking technology only in rare circumstances, such as hostage situations, the FBI said.

"It should come as no surprise that the FBI uses planes to follow terrorists, spies, and serious criminals," FBI Deputy Director Mark Giuliano said. "We have an obligation to follow those people who want to hurt our country and its citizens, and we will continue to do so."
