Along with the evolution of the Internet, the way news travels significantly changed, with the possibility to now search and only read the headlines that interest you, without having to sit through everything on TV.

However, it becomes a time-consuming process to access your preferred news provider for the latest events around the world, requiring you to open your web browser, navigating to the specific page, and hitting the Refresh button a few times in case you’re waiting for something in particular.

There is a nifty solution, which notifies you when your trusted source gets updated. It takes little time to set up and configure, letting you focus on the task at hand. Below you find a couple of ways to configure an RSS Reader.
The long way around

Step 1: Download, install, and run RSSOwl.

Step 2-a: Create a feed by pasting in the source URL. Hit Next, give it a name, and Finish to save changes.

Or:

Step 2-b: Write down a topic of interest (i.e: software, health, science, etc.). Press Next and select the desired service. Give it a name and hit Finish to confirm.

Or:

Step 2-c: Follow the Import Wizard link for more results. Choose to Import Recommended Feeds, select the categories of interest, and press Finish.

Step 3: Browse through the imported feeds located in the left navigation pane.

Step 4: Select entries to have displayed content. Leave the Application minimized to receive tray notifications when updates are made.

Bonus feature: With a news item selected, hit the Share button and select the service to use so that your friends and family are informed on topics of interest.
Scrolling headlines on your desktop

Step 1: Download, install, and run Desktop Ticker.

Step 2: Arrange the feed bar either on the top, bottom, or leave it floating. Dragging the borders helps you resize it.

Step 3: Press the little file button in the top left.

Step 4: Under the File menu, choose to Manage Feeds.

Step 5: Several, popular providers are made available by default. You can add custom URLs in the dedicated field. Tick only the ones you want to view scrolling.

Step 6: Press OK to confirm changes and pay attention to the scrolling text or audio alert on new items.

Bonus feature: The notification area can be fully customized with different colors, level of opacity, even corresponding background pictures for news headlines.
