Hilarious random startup website generator is pretty damn realistic

A pair of Georgia Tech computer science students have created a Random Startup Website Generator that spits out a different jargon-laden startup website every time you click on the URL.

Among the gems pumped out for me: vowel-challenged Phonestr ("a place for people who enjoy phoning to connect"), Rememberable ("We're remembering to sustain things that matter"), Outsideify ("We use outsides to adventure things that matter") and certain IPO candidate StareLink ("StareLink is why you'll never stare the same way again").

Of course, if you think those are amusing, check out the names on our running list of the REAL network and IT startups that have gotten venture funding so far this year.

Mike Bradley and Tiffany Zhang's random startup website generator, which they did as a side project over Spring Break to practice their web programming, has gained some attention this week after Zhang dropped it on Hacker News and Reddit.

The site, written in Javascript with a heavily modified Bootstrap template as the base, is procedurally generated using seeded random numbers -- that's how the number in the URL is able to represent the site as a whole. The results come from lists of words that are filled in Mad Lib-style, with tweaks to ensure things make sense, Bradley says. "There are one trillion possible seeds, which was just an arbitrary choice on our part," he adds, noting that many of the resulting sites were never anticipated.

As Bradley explains on his personal web page, the generator "serves as a parody of startups that have websites full of vague praise and little information about their actual business, often because they have little to show in that regard." The site has been received enthusiastically, with one viewer calling it "pure satirical genius."

For anyone who has wandered into the world of tech start-up websites touting their software-defined, cloud-based, X-of-things-as-a-service blather, the random startup webpage generator is a treat. (Other such sites have existed for years, and in fact some of them have been rounded up here, but the Georgia Tech juniors' program takes things to a new level.)

Not only does the generator produce website home pages, but also cranks out those standard pages you love such as About, Our Team and Contact, featuring the usual inane customer quotes and personnel titles (i.e., CJO...?).
