Massive earthquake in Nepal; over 3500 killed

According to IMD, tremors were felt across eastern and northern parts of India.

A massive earthquake and a series of aftershocks have hit several parts of Nepal since Saturday morning, leaving in their wake dead, injured and damaged roads and buildings. Some tremors have lasted as much as 20 seconds.

According to US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the quake was Lamjung district in western part of Nepal. The earthquake was of 7.9 magnitude on the Richter scale.

The first tremor was felt around 11.50 a.m. and the aftershocks have continued even at the time of filing this report at 2.45 p.m.

Spokesperson at the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Office in Kathmandu told The Hindu that the historic Dharahara Tower in the heart of the capital collapsed. With Saturday being a weekly holiday in the country and climbing the tower a popular holiday habit, police fear many could be trapped in the rubble.

Reports pouring in from several parts of the country, according to several local media account, point to massive damage to older structures, roads. The number of dead and injured could not yet to be ascertained, but some dead bodies have been taken to the Civil Hospital, according to Kantipur Radio. The radio station also said cracks have appeared on the Araniko Highway which leads to Khasa in Tibetan Autonomous Region of China.

Landslides in Sikkim

The high-intensity also triggered landslides in various parts of Sikkim. A series of minor landslides have been reported from various places in the State, but there was no report of any loss of life so far. Read more

Tremors felt in Kolkata

One person was reported dead in north Bengal, while strong tremors were felt in Kolkata and its suburbs on Saturday as a high intensity earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter Scale with its epicentre in Nepal, rocked many parts of north and east India. Read more

Tremors in north India

Tremors were felt across eastern and northern parts of India, said J.L. Gautam, Head (Operations), Seismology, at the Indian Meteorological Department.

“Earthquake of magnitude 7.5 occurred today at 11.41 a.m. between latitude 28.1 North and Longitude 84.6 East. The epicentre was located in Nepal,” an IMD statement said.

The tremors, which were felt in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, lasted for a minute, triggering panic and forcing people to rush out of their houses and offices.

Two persons were injured in the high intensity earthquake in different parts of Bihar, prompting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to cut short his visit to New Delhi.

There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property in Delhi. Read more

Officials said Metro train services in Delhi were also affected due to the earthquake.

The quake was 31 km deep. Aftershocks were felt in Delhi and parts of northern India. "We are working to reach out to those affected, both at home and in Nepal," said Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the quake. He has called high-level meeting at 3 p.m. to discuss situation emerging due to earthquake.

The count has exceeded 3000 :( Most of them are tourists from other countries.
