Hacker could serve longer jail sentence than the rapists he exposed

Deric Lostutter, the 26-year-old hacker who helped expose the rape of a teenage girl in Steubenville, Ohio, could spend as much as five times longer in jail than the two high school football players responsible, reports Tech Worm.

The Steubenville rape case garnered widespread national attention in 2013, after it emerged that there had been a room full of witnesses who not only didn’t report the crime, but posted photos and videos on social media mocking the victim. Lostutter, a former member of the hacking group Anonymous, was responsible for making the incident public, posting a video which outed the perpetrators on the football team’s fan page.

As Mother Jones notes, another hacker going by the name of Batcat has since publicly taken credit for the hack of the football team’s website. However, Lostutter has claimed he was responsible for obtaining photos, screenshots and evidence related to the case, appearing on CNN in 2013 wearing a Guy Fawkes mask.

16-year-olds Ma’lik Richmond and Trent Mays were both convicted of rape in the initial case, sentenced to between one and two years in juvenile detention, but Lostutter could now face up 10-years in prison for methods used to obtain evidence against them. Lostutter is being investigated by the FBI, which raided his home last April with a search warrant that claims that he may have committed federal crimes including “identity theft, attempt and conspiracy,” “aggravated identity theft” and “computer crimes.”

If indicted, a number of questions will likely be asked, including whether a 10-year sentence is appropriate for Lostutter’s crimes, compared to the 1-year sentence for the rape he exposed. The laws concerning hacking have come under the spotlight recently, with President Obama announcing plans to revise the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act in January this year.

If the police hacked in order to find out who did this, they would be rewarded upon discovering and arresting the rapist. When people who want to do good try and do the same, they are treated worse than the criminal. Exposing crime is now illegal, at least that is the message that seems transparent here. I say that everyone responsible for putting this man in jail (the hacker) needs to be thrown in jail for double the amount as the hacker for utter and sheer stupidity and purposeful incivility.

If you don't reward people who do the right thing and instead PUNSIH them, this encourages crime and lawlessness and discourages law abiding behavior and every day order and peace. What the law has decided here is that ONLY Police/military have permission to do the right thing and anyone else who tries to do so will be treated as a criminal, not a normal good person trying to do the right thing. They have reversed the reward system now; instead of getting rewarded for doing good they punish you SEVERALY. This can ONLY breed crime and chaos.

That's how twisted and disproportionated the law is for now. And that's the result of the changes made in it for ppl to mantain its status quo, regardless the absurdity of them.

Law is supposed to bring justice and fairnes, not indiscriminated punishments... for that it's better to bring back tyranny...

In my country the law is more twisted than that... with greedy/dirty/stupid/whatever_you_want ppl who believes as god theirselves, doing whatever they want whit it, ruled by who puts more money under their desks... and thats no law, nor justice.

Rob a bank for $1000 or even steal a candy bar: Get shot and/or do hard time.

Crash the economy, lie, cheat, kill, and steal at the highest levels: Get promoted to CEO or elected to high office.

They are truly setting an example as to how they want us to behave, I hope they know this well. They WANT us to be criminals, they truly do. Don't be, but don't stand down either.
