You can now move your data out of Google

Google had been testing a feature to allow users to export their history for quite some time now, but it has just been revealed that the function is now available to use.

So, in case you can summon up the courage to download your web history, the instructions on how to do it have been carefully explained on Google’s official website.

All you have to do is click on Google Web History, then on the gear button from the right corner of the page and hit Download.

A new window should pop up, letting you know that Google will be creating an archive of your history and that you should receive an email as soon as you can download it from Google Drive, which shouldn't take more than just a few seconds.

Before you click on Create Archive, you might want to read Google instructions on how to protect your “sensitive data,” like not downloading the information on public computers or “keeping the bad guys out” with the 2-step verification functionality.

Shortly after you click on Create Archive, you should receive an email from Google telling you that the archive is stored in Google Drive, along with the link that will take you to it. You can then access the ZIP file, and it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with the information.

Delete searches & browsing activity

Your searches and browsing activity are saved in your Web & App Activity when it's turned on and you're signed in to your Google Account. You're in control of what's saved, and you can delete it or turn the setting off whenever you like.

So, you may want to do what I did: 1.) delete the search history from the beginning of time on your account, 2.) only sign in when necessary -- then immediately sign out when you have finished the required activity.
