Windows will no longer boot beyond this date

Microsoft is working to bring Windows 10 to the market this summer, but around 3 million users have already installed the technical preview builds that were released in the last few months.

While we’re not going to talk about the reasons for installing such an early version of the operating system because we’re pretty sure most do it out of curiosity, it’s worth noting that starting this month, the first preview builds will stop booting and require users to update their systems.

Windows 10 builds 9841, 9860, and 9879 have already expired on April 15, but will continue to work normally until April 30. After this date, computers running any of these three builds would no longer boot and will display prompts to update to newer versions of the Windows 10 Technical Preview.
Newer builds will work through October

On the other hand, if you’re running a newer Windows 10 version and you don’t plan to update anytime soon because of various reasons, you can safely use the same build until October 15.

According to information provided by a Microsoft support engineer in a post on the Microsoft Community forums, Windows 10 build 9926, 10041, and 10049 will start displaying expiration warnings on September 17, while the license will expire on October 1. Windows will eventually stop booting on October 15 if one of these three versions is installed.

Needless to say, everyone running Windows 10 Technical Preview is expected to update to the final release when it becomes available and Microsoft says that it’s working to make the update all the way to RTM possible.

Windows 10 RTM is expected to be announced in June, while general availability is likely to happen in July or August, so there’s no reason to continue using the technical preview until October.

Keep in mind that newer builds of the TP are also expected to be shipped until RTM becomes available and the next release is likely to take place later this month at BUILD, so you really don’t have a good reason to stick to an old version.
