This is about all sorts of stuff ranging from h/w to OS to s/w so I'll post it here & maybe it is the right place for it ??

Yesterday I did something really stooopid.

I lost my mind for a minute and trusted windows disk management to make a new extended partion for me.

Pure stooopidity. Ooops.

I should know better than to trust windows for any serious functions...but I forgot for 1 minute too long.

It barfed the partition table taking a bunch of important stuff into no-man's-land.

The search for the fix commenced.

Nothing I had right at hand could uncover the 'lost' partitions.

Finally - after way too long I found the best tool hiding in an old BartPE CD;

Which leads me to=>

1st mention of thanks - Partition Table Doctor.

This is an old (2005 ??) windows version of the even older DOS app that works better than most for finding & bringing back vanished partitions.

It worked perfectly...phew.

After all that my brain was back online and I realized that it was time for some serious backing up.

Of course I keep multiple backup images, snapshots, etc - but when a partition table gets barfed it is best to have an actual & recent clone all ready to use.

2nd mention of thanks - SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter.

I've got a couple of these and they are about the most handy things ever.

I can take a naked SATA/IDE drive of almost any sort and connect data & power as an external device, then just plug it into a USB port - presto, instant added disk drive !!

Here is a page about what I got:

I found a spare HDD with enough space to clone into, and wanted to do a 'hot' backup, so I needed the one thing that will do that very easily...

3rd mention of thanks - Easeus Todo Backup, WS edition.

Cloned the C: drive to the external in just a few minutes, with no trouble a'tall.

All the other stuff could be cloned just as I wanted it with my favourite utility:

4th mention of thanks - MiniTool Partition Wizard.

I cannot say enough good things about this utility.

It just does everything it claims and always does it well for me.

After all that - what happens ?!?

One of the email thingies that I get THEN comes in to remind me...:

World Backup Day is 3-31-15

(http://www.worldbackupday.com/en/)

OK, OK - I get it - even if I needed a mini disaster to remind me !!

Your experience is yet another reminder to all of us: back up your system. And have a backup of your backup.
