Man fatally shot at US-Canada border identified
SUMAS, Wash. (AP) — Authorities have released the identity of the man fatally shot by a border agent on the U.S-Canada border in Washington state.
The Whatcom County medical examiner says the man shot Thursday afternoon was 20-year-old Jamison E. Childress. No hometown was given.
At a news conference Friday, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said the man was suspected of having illegally crossed the border. Whatcom County, Washington, Sheriff Bill Elfo said the man was wanted for a murder in another jurisdiction. He didn't provide further details.
The man was approached by two border agents after setting off ground sensors. The agency says he displayed "erratic and threatening" behavior toward the agents and sprayed one of them with an incapacitating spray before he was shot.
