YouTube starts experimenting with 60fps 4K video

It was October last year when Google introduced a genuinely useful new feature to YouTube. That features is 60fps playback for HD footage, which makes viewing certain videos, especially video games gameplay, a much nicer experience. Now Google is upping the bar for video quality once again.

An experiment has started on YouTube to combine that 60fps playback with ultra high definition videos. That’s right, videos you can watch at 4K 60fps are starting to appear, albeit in very limited numbers right now.

For the majority of people visiting YouTube today, this will be an unusable new feature. 4K screen resolution is still a new, and fairly expensive thing to have. However, that is going to change, and change quickly. By experimenting with the option now, YouTube will be prepared for when 4K becomes the norm on the desktop, laptops, and other portable devices.

In order to play these videos at 4K 60fps you will need two things: a display with a resolution of at least 3840 x 2160, and a PC capable of coping with the load. Apparently the latest iMac with Retina 5K display can handle these videos easily, but older Apple Retina hardware, or any PC that doesn’t have a decent CPU/GPU combo is going to struggle and the video will appear choppy if it manages to play at all.

There are currently six videos on YouTube that support this setting. Two of those are embedded above, with the rest available as part of a YouTube playlist, which is sure to grow over the coming weeks and months.
