Phantom Dust Xbox One gameplay video leaks

For a games platform to survive it needs a regular supply of good games, but for it to thrive then original IP really is required. Microsoft has that for Xbox, with the biggest hitter being the Halo series. The Xbox One did have another original IP set for release this year called Phantom Dust, but Microsoft recently took the game off developer Darkside Games resulting in the studio’s closure.

The game is not canceled, on the contrary, it’s quite advanced in terms of development as a gameplay video leaked this week demonstrates.

Phantom Dust was originally released on the Xbox back in 2004 in Japan and 2005 in North America. Microsoft developed and published the title, but the design was done by Yukio Futatsugi, best known for creating the Panzer Dragoon series of games while working at Sega.

The action strategy game was well-received, averaging 81 on Metacritic. The announcement of a reboot title for the Xbox One was unexpected, but a clever decision by Microsoft. This leaked video demonstrates 1v1 multiplayer and looks solid and almost complete.

For comparison, here’s the original Xbox game in action:

Apparently Darkside Games was tasked with recreating 70%t of the original game while adding 30% new stuff. The leaked video clearly looks and feels like the original and uses the same mix of combat and strategic skill use. The destructible environments also look like a nice touch that adds to gameplay and strategy.

The game is still being worked on according to Microsoft, but we don’t know if that’s a team just finishing what Darkside created, or starting again. We also still don’t know exactly why Microsoft decided to stop using Darkside, because on this evidence they were creating something potentially great for Xbox One.
