Super Mario 64 speedrun world record accidentally broken

Until yesterday, the speedrun world record for Super Mario 64 was set at 1 hour 42 minutes and 32 seconds by speedrunner puncayshun. However, that record has now been beaten, and it was done totally by accident by another speedrunner called Nero.

So how do you break a speedrun world record by accident? In this case it’s by challenging another player to a complete playthrough of the Japanese version of the N64 game. Nero went up against puncayshun in a challenge to see who could collect all 120 stars in the game the fastest. You can tell that the playthrough was relaxed because Nero quit playing twice only to later come back and continue his run. Doing this extends the play time and therefore should be avoided if serious about your final time.

Nero managed to collect his 120th star first and then realized he’d managed to do it 17 seconds faster than the now former world record time. If he hadn’t taken those two game breaks he’d have beaten it by an even larger margin. The proof of his 1st place can be seen on Speedrun.com.

Here’s the full playthrough Nero did if you’ve got 1 hour 42 minutes and 15 seconds to spare:

I suspect we may see a few more of these star challenge playthroughs now. The game can clearly be beaten faster than the current world record time, and there’s no shortage of players in the top 10 who would love to own that top spot. Expect it to change hands a few times in the coming months.
