There are a number of devices on the market today that try and bring new life to retro gaming. The latest example of that is the Retron 5, offering up multiple system compatibility in a single console. However, the Retron 5 may be functional, but it certainly isn’t pretty. The R-Kaid-R on the other hand is a beautiful, hand-crafted portable arcade system.

The individual who has created the R-Kaid-R goes by the name of Love Hulten. He’s a Swedish designer and craftsman with a focus on creating unique devices. This is certainly one of those.

Inside this solid wooden box measuring 27 x 17 x 9cm you’ll find an 8-inch 4:3 LCD with an 800 x 600 resolution. Games are controlled using a custom, screw-in 8-way joystick (that also doubles as a carry handle for the box) and 8 buttons. Under the hood you’ll find a battery that will allow play for 8 hours on a single charge, as well as a USB port and SD card slot (16GB card included). There isn’t any details on the actual hardware running the games, but you have to assume it will be something like a Raspberry Pi board.

So what can you play on this thing? Supported systems include:

  • MAME
  • Neo Geo
  • PC Engine / Turbo Grafx 16
  • PlayStation 1
  • Atari 2600
  • Game Boy
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Nintendo
  • Super Nintendo
  • Sega Master System
  • Sega Genesis
  • Scummvm
  • Doom
  • Duke Nukem 3D

This all sounds great until you get to the price. The base R-Kaid-R costs 2,499 euros (S2,840) and is being produced on a limited run of 50. If you want a custom leather case that will be an extra 379 euros ($430). The game Cave Story is included for free, but there’s an option of a further 50+ games as part of a Starter Kit, which costs another 59 euros ($67). This is all before you add on the 25% sales tax (depending on where you are in the world).

It’s a very expensive indulgence, but then you are getting a handmade and quite unique retro gaming arcade machine you can play on the go. Not that you’d take this thing outside for fear of damaging it.
