Looks promising, but Protonmail is still in BETA, and after registering you are put on hold.

You are required to wait for the free space available on the Protonmail servers in Switzerland. How long ? Who knows ....

My close friend is looking for alternate to "email.is" which is going to shut down its free servers on 1st Feb 2015 and moving to new one as a paid service.

How about "unseen.is"? any suggestions? I also came across this old post: http://www.ghacks.net/2014/02/21/unseen-4096-bits-encryption-communication-service-island/

Also, this article: http://cryto.net/~joepie91/blog/2014/04/19/why-you-should-stay-away-from-unseen.is/

It is pretty confusing on security, encryption, logs and storage of keys.

In short unseen made their own crypto part and failed miserably which in return can/will result in bad security for their users.

I mentioned Countermail and Kolab, they don't offer free service so they are not the choice for your friend since you mentioned he seeks free mail service. I used Autistici, and I have nothing negative to say about them, Riseup is very popular but never used it. Autistici/Inventati https://www.autistici.org/en/ and Riseup https://help.riseup.net/en/

In the end it all comes down to who you trust :)

EDIT:

One more I forgot (also free): https://www.mailoo.org

Thanks for the reply.

However, Autistici uses an invalid security certificate - (Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer) untrusted connection by firefox.

Riseup, says:

We keep minimal logs: Most Online Service Providers keep detailed records of all connections. In general, we do not keep information which uniquely identifies you or could be used to build a profile of your usage and associations. We do not log IP addresses. For troubleshooting, we may enable increased logging for brief periods of time. These extra logs are deleted immediately after they are used.

We do not share data with anyone: We do not share any user information with any other groups or individuals. Within the Riseup Collective, members of the collective have access only to information which they need in order to perform their work.

Also, Mailoo.org is in French[no English support] as I'm not comfortable with completely French UI.

Autistici uses their own CA for their own services, they don't support paid CA's and they don't trust them. That's the reason you are seeing "Invalid certificate".

As for Mailoo, they used to have English registration page but they removed it. You can change the webmail language without any problems to English. They use Roundcube webmail.

To register visit https://www.mailoo.org/inscription/

Field 01: Mail address of your choice such as [email protected] 02: PasswordField 03: Password Field 04: Image code verification on your left side

EDIT:

As for Riseup, as I said, in the end you deceide who will you trust.

One thing is for sure I read in the news that Goggle and Microsoft been giving info out to the US Govt.. So best not to do anything that may get you in trouble with them if you use there services. Its going to become a common thing it looks like. Most of the Private Mail Services are ether paid or closed beta and most of them go paid when they come out of beta.

Protonmail as probably others hasn't got adds so this is is understandable. B)

NSA-dodging mail service explains why email can never truly be private and secure

Earlier this month, Lavabit and Silent Circle—two privacy-minded email providers—decided to shut up shop rather than give the U.S. government the chance to access to their customer data. Shortly thereafter, Lavabit owner Ladar Levison told Forbes, "If you knew what I knew about email, you might not use it."

Some private ones shut down instead of giving out info . So who's to say you if you buy one they may not close down because of this or give your info out anyways . ;)

Well you can always add your own domain to some of them and be independent on using their domain name as your mail alias. Second is self hosted which I don't recommend unless you know what your doing. Or the alternative is to encrypt your mail on client side using GPG/PGP.
