steven36 Posted November 25, 2014 Share Posted November 25, 2014 The modern OS finally overtakes XP in global usageIt was only a matter until this happened, so it's better late than never: Windows 8.1 managed to overtake Windows XP in global market share, thus becoming the second most used operating system in the world.Statistics provided by market researcher StatCounter for the month of November (the first 21 days) show that Windows 8.1 is now powering 11.92 percent of the desktop computers across the world, while Windows XP is next with 11.79 percent.Windows 7 continues to be the leader on the desktop with a global share of 55.95 percent and growing, which is an indication that those stepping away from Windows XP haven't necessarily moved to the modern OS, but also to Windows 7.The fourth place in the top goes to Mac OS X, which is currently installed on 8.98 percent of the computers, while Windows 8 is next with 5.5 percent. Overall, Microsoft's mobile operating system (the combined market share of Windows 8 and 8.1) reached a total score of 17.42 percent.Windows XP quickly going downWindows XP is quickly losing users, and it's not quite a surprising thing given the fact that Microsoft stopped providing support for this particular OS version in April this year.Since then, Windows XP computers have received no security updates, which means that they all remain vulnerable to attacks supposed to exploit found flaws in the operating system.On the other hand, Microsoft pushed many users to Windows 8.1, but not everyone decided to go for this particular OS version.
