The open-sourcing of Microsoft

Microsoft is finally getting real about open-source software.

From ZDNet:

Today, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella says that "Microsoft loves Linux."

This wasn't a sudden change that only happened because Ballmer was finally shown the door. No, this change has been coming for years.

In 2008, Sam Ramji, then Microsoft's director of platform technology strategy, said "The Microsoft open-source strategy is focused on helping customers and partners be successful in today's heterogeneous technology world." In 2011, Microsoft saw that the cloud was going to be built largely on Linux and they were a top Linux contributor.

So, now - we are going to believe what Microsoft says . . . . . . . . . . blindly. :tehe:

Windows is the only OS I can think of not based off some form of Linux, bizarre custom OS, ancient stuff, and maybe embedded (and everything embedded these days is probably Linux derived anyway or Windows Embedded).

Android (and of course every variant, skin, mod, etc), iOS, Mac OS X, the gazillion Linux distros, all Linux/Unix/BSD (let's not split hairs about this, they all use a similar folder structure and common standards).

Windows though is totally different from all of them, and closed source.
