Microsoft today released a redesigned Skype app for Windows and Mac that is built to make it easier to chat and share. If you already using Skype on mobile, you’ll recognize that this desktop redesign is inspired from it.

You can see thumbnail pictures of your contacts, a new bubble-style chat design, and consistent icons for chat, video calls and audio calls.

Photos in new Skype for Windows and Mac apps are beautifully displayed for your instant viewing. Also, on Windows, there’s more spacing between contacts and chats, as well as message previews for unread chats, making it even easier to follow conversations.

Microsoft has also made improvements to other types of file sharing, too. When you share file types like Office documents and PDFs, you’ll see file icons displayed to make it easier to visually scan for and find different files in your chat history.

There is a new side-by-side design, you can effortlessly multi-task on a voice or video call. On Mac, it only takes one click. Share messages, photos or files for a more active conversation together, without ever leaving your call.

It’s important to keep in touch with others, and Skype has become a valuable communication tool for both home and business users alike. The cross platform tool can be used to conduct text based chats with your contacts as well as audio and video calls. You can converse with your Skype contacts, but there is also Facebook integration which enables you to make use of your social networking contact list.
For some time it has been possible to make use of the Facebook chat feature of the social network from within the app – no need to visit the web site. The latest version adds the option to conduct video calls with Facebook users in addition to the existing option to do so with your Skype contacts.
Other new features include the ability to conduct group video chats, and this is a very useful option for anyone who wants to use the program to conduct online meetings. There is now also support for push-to-talk which enables you to use Skype much a walkie-talkie. Ideal when gaming, this feature means that you need not be constantly involved in a voice chat, but you can choose when ou would like to share what you are saying.
Available for Mac and PC – there are also more limited clients available for iOS and Android – Skype has become a serious communication tool. The ability to not only conduct voice and video chats, but also send and receive files, and even make phone calls to landlines and mobile phones, means that Skype is far more versatile than other messaging tools.
This is the Beta Preview of the forthcoming Skype for Desktop 7.0. What's new in 7.0?
- Improved chat experience- Chat and call simultaneously with one click- Free group video calls

Verdict:

For both home and office users, Skype is an incredibly valuable tool and the latest additions are great improvements.
The build number on the preview version of Skype is 6.21.85.104.

Skype updates always confuse me because there's like 3-4 different installers, and you don't always know what is BETA.

People are saying it is a preview, if so, why did my OS X check for updates push a 7.0 if it is a BETA?

  • 1 month later...

why isn't this frontpaged?

It's a final/stable release isn't it?

Because @jalaffa intends not to post on frontpage.

Dont you understand this ? If you have something to say, say it directly to one of the staff members.
