Windows 9 to support up to 8k resolution

For those of you who have used high DPI devices with Windows 8, you will know that the OS struggled with supporting these devices. Windows 8.1 made it a bit better but support for high resolution display is still not all that great from developers and even in some Microsoft branded products. But, that all appears to be changing with the next installment of Windows.

According to the folks over at PCportal, who appear to have an older build of Windows 9, it looks the next major installment will support high resolution displays up to 8K. The image above shows the new sizes for the Windows Explorer icon found in Windows 9 and the image below shows scaling for classic apps that need to make use of the higher DPI.

Microsoft knows that higher resolution devices will become the norm during the lifecycle of Windows 9 and that is why they are including this support. While 8K may seem a bit high, in a few years from now, we have no doubt that it will become a standard resolution on high end machines.

Well they do have a 2K Smartphone.

Someone will go 8K just to start another round of dick waving, then all Smartphones will have absurdly unnecessary DPI that obliterates battery.

Well they need to exhaust 2K, 4K, 5K, 6K, 7K before they get to 8K in Mobile Devices, while introducing higher capacity mAh Batteries with better battery life... HTC introduced 1080p @ 4.7", Sharp Claimed 1080p @ 4.5", Sony bragged about 1080p @ 4.6", Someone leaked 2K @ 5.2"... Microsoft it's up to you, to launch the 1st 4K Tablet @ 10.6" with Higher mAh capacity and longer battery life. Making it lighter, faster and worth the $$$ price...

Please no 5K and 7K.

This is meant to double, after all, with 1080p as the base. People are already having issues because Apple used 3x icons for 6+ (where normal Retina = 2x) instead of doing a 4x. It works, but designers have to deal with subpixel rounding. Tripling 1080p wouldn't do that, but most scaling has worked on doubling.

We really need better batteries. We've been using the same old tired battery tech for a few decades, and haven't improved much. Most phone improvements the past couple of years have just been bigger batteries, and smaller nm chips that use less juice.

I agree with Cody, we don't need higher resolutions when the batteries they use are bad. Lithium batteries degrade when you fully discharge them, higher mAh won't make much of a difference and not everyone can get to a charger before the battery gets depleted.

We need better batteries for phones, tablets and laptops.
