The video game publisher announced Wednesday morning that sci-fi game Destiny has had the biggest new video game franchise launch ever with more than $500 million in first-day sales. The game was released at midnight at more than 11,000 openings around the world.
"This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world," said Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. "The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment's Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up."
Destiny, created by Halo developer Bungie, is a first-person shooter set in a mythical open world. The game, which was scored by Paul McCartney, has been in the works since 2009. Activision in August announced that it would commit $500 million into developing the franchise over the next decade.
The Santa Monica company has long counted on tentpoles Call of Duty and World of Warcraft to drive sales, but the company has expanded its slate of hit franchises with the introduction of Skylanders in 2011.
Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said he believes that Destiny could be "Activision's next billion-dollar brand."
"Since the beginning, we've been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off," he said. "But not many people believed we'd be able to say it did so on day one. Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry's history. It's also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history."
