Boss of Tag Heuer, Zenith and Hublot says Apple has made "some fundamental mistakes" with its smartwatch

'Feminine styling and substandard design language'

Apple's long-awaited smartwatch looks "too feminine" and its design will not stand the test of time, luxury giant LVMH's watch guru has said. Jean-Claude Biver, who heads the French group's luxury watch division, said the US tech giant had made "some fundamental mistakes" designing the Apple Watch.

"This watch has no sex appeal. It's too feminine and looks too much like the smartwatches already on the market," Mr Biver said in an interview with daily Die Welt. "To be totally honest, it looks like it was designed by a student in their first trimester," added Mr Biver, who heads up the brands Tag Heuer, Zenith and Hublot.

Mr Biver predicted the much-anticipated device, with its square face and curved edges, would soon be outdated.

"Luxury always has something timeless, it's rare and conveys prestige," he was quoted as saying, adding that the same could not be said for Apple Watch, which is expected to be bought by millions of customers and will likely be beyond repair in a few years' time.

Mr Biver is not the first watch chief to be dismissive of Apple's efforts. Swatch CEO Nick Hayek earlier told Swiss media that the world's biggest watch group was "not nervous" about Apple's foray into the market.

Apple Watch, which comes in several colours and links to the iPhone, will start at $349 when it is released early next year. The wrist device is the first new product category to be launched by Apple since the death of co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011.

Don't plan on getting this but somehow I bet it will sell an ass ton.

We all mocked the iPad, I at least mocked it for the name, what with their being a skit about it, but look what happened.

That being said the people who have $10K+ watches aren't going to consider this a replacement for their luxury watch, not in the slightest.

But Fitbit and all the others in that industry are fucked, between this and the Android Wear.

I would never buy an apple product, period. But I wouldn't buy an android smartwatch either, I am so relieved that since the mobile phone I don't need to wear a watch anymore. I hate those things around my wrist

LOL, how about only use a dumb phone like I do? hahaha. I have never bought any Apple product or Android product. Still using my flip phone from 2008, and I don't have to recharge it until beyond 5 days.

349 bucks and it looks like it came out of a crackerjacks box and belongs on 8 year old kids wrist....who does not want to wear it because it looks like a toy

Monkey D. Luffy

And I was actually excited by this... looks like a toy. Watches are supposed to have a suggestion of complexity, the opposite of simplicity, part of their fashion... I suppose Apple was likely to be a bad candidate for a watch anyways...

I agree. Very basic, primitive design. Too feminine. Complete lack of personality.

Nevertheless, Apple will sell a ton of them for sure.
