Windows Phone has better battery life than Android [When the specs are the same]

Yesterday, HTC announced that they would begin selling a Windows Phone variant of their HTC One M8 smartphone.

Seeing that the hardware is identical to that of Android version, the best test of performance is to see how long the battery will last when using the device.

Both devices have a 2600 mAh battery, the same 2.3 Ghz quad core processor, same display, same everything.

What is different between the two devices is the battery life.

The Windows Phone version is stated to have talk time of 22 hrs and standby time of 528 hrs whereas the Android version is stated to have 20 hrs of talk time and 496 hours standby time. These figures were pulled from HTCs website (Windows Phone, Android); the Verizon website offered dramatically different stats for the Android that slanted the battery life much further towards Windows Phone but this could be a typing error.

That's about 10% better battery life by simply switching the operating system, and this shows that Windows Phone devices do get better battery life than their Android counterparts. It is worth pointing out that Windows Phone hardware is more restrictive than Android and therefore is optimized for the platforms that it runs on, where as Android is more flexible.

For those that love the hardware of the HTC One M8, the better battery life on the Windows Phone version may be enough to sway users to the platform. But, Android is still king of the market and crucially has a better app ecosystem.

Whats your take on this? Let me know in the comments below.

Will you opt or switch platforms because of longer battery life?

Well even if Android is a poorly optimized OS, that becomes junk once OEMs touch it, it has way more apps and features than WP.

Never would I ever want a WP device.

Interesting from the way you are looking at, what if you are not a super user, you don't need more apps. All your productive apps that you can every think of is on the WP.

If it has all you want maybe.

But WP is quite scarce on apps and you have to dig through 100 similar scam apps to get to the good ones, and I've seen a lot of 3rd party ones when there should be an official app. Many of the big companies that are everywhere else ignore WP. Google screwed MS by making Push need the Gmail app on other OS beside Android (I have an iOS tweak that uses that app to get Push but you get them in iOS Mail), and then didn't want to make a Gmail app for Metro.

You know your mobile ecosystem is the red-headed stepchild when people waited over a year for an official Facebook app. FB has apps for ancient worthless junk phones that only exist today because they are used in 3rd world countries, and even they have dumped them in mass for dirt cheap Android phones.

That is soo true, maybe MS should settle with Google. Sometimes you wonder... with these big tech companies....

I agree with this article, also android is RAM eater phone.

IMO, you wont be able to play HD games on android with 512 MB RAM, but on WP you can do it.

I have a Windows phone. It does everything I want it to and does it well.

I previously used Android - but prefer WP.

Each to their own...

No - reminded me of some of the scams around Android apps and iPhone running up thousands of pounds from games.
