Microsoft is planning to release a technical preview of Windows 9 (threshold) in late September or early October to anyone interested. This is similar to what Microsoft did with Windows 8. Getting software into the hands of customers enables Microsoft to make tweaks to the operating system before releasing it publicly.

Mary Jo Foley, who initially broke this story, reports users should expect mandatory monthly updates to the tech preview. This will enable Microsoft to treat Windows like it currently treats its Xbox One preview program by releasing new features and fixes monthly. Hopefully these monthly updates will refine Windows 9 to perfection for its rumored spring 2015 public release.

Windows 9 has been rumored to come with many user requested improvements. These include a scaled down 'Mini-Start', Windowed Metro apps, and removal of the Charms bar. In addition to these refinements, Microsoft is also rumored to be bringing virtual desktops like in Mac and Ubuntu. Finally Cortana is rumored to be making an appearance on Windows 9 in some capacity.

Microsoft will probably evolve the tech preview with user feedback each month. It is unclear if the development pattern with Windows 8 will be followed where multiple previews will be released or if Microsoft will choose to keep evolving the tech preview monthly until final release. There is a possibility Microsoft may release a public preview to anyone at the end of 2014, but this may get skipped in favor of just rolling changes into the tech preview.

Are you going to get the technical preview? When do you expect Microsoft to deliver this preview? Are you excited for Windows 9? Let us know in the comments below!

We knew it was coming , and by the way Cloud 365 is again up in rumors

If the Windows 8.1 Update 2 is not released in ISO form, Windows 9 (rename it how you like) may most probably hit the stands this year, itself. yXZVmpE.gif

According to well-known insider, Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft will deliver a public preview of their next operating system in late September or early October. While Microsoft hasn't confirmed what this OS will be called, it's expected to be Windows 9, codenamed internally as 'Threshold'.

The "technology preview" will be available publicly, and should contain many of the features expected to launch with the OS. There's no word currently on whether it will be the only public preview of Windows 9, although as Microsoft is moving to a faster release cycle, it's unlikely we'll see as many previews as we got for Windows 8.

New features that have been widely rumored to make an apperance in Windows 9 include the return of the Start menu for desktop users, virtual desktops, the ability to run Metro-style applications in windows, the removal of the Charms bar for some users, and possibly Cortana integration as well.

Threshold is also expected to mark the convergence of many versions of Windows into one. For example, Microsoft will merge Windows RT and Windows Phone into one version supporting ARM-based systems. The Xbox One will also receive a major overhaul to bring it inline with the current version of Windows, and universal apps will be able to run on devices of all sizes.

The final version of Windows 9 will reportedly launch in April 2015, with Microsoft opting for a shorter gap between the first preview and its launch.

When the preview is finally released, on current internal builds of Windows Threshold, you can upgrade builds with a single click of a button, when you open Windows Update, there is a new feature in this area that allows you to upgrade your build of Windows, meaning you could go from build 9825 to 9829 with a single click. :D
