Grandmother, grandson sold heroin, narcotics

PLAINFIELD, Conn. (WTNH) — Police say they broke up a drug-dealing family.

A grandmother and her grandson are charged with heroin-related offenses, and another woman is charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Elaine Coffey, 65, the grandmother, is charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, failure to keep narcotics in a proper container and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Nicholas Coffey, 24, is charged with conspiracy to commit possession of heroin, conspiracy to commit possession of heroin with intent to sell, operating under suspension and traveling unreasonably fast. Jody Read, 34, is charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police said they received numerous tips “concerning an abundance of short-term traffic in and around the area of [a] Hemlock Drive [home]” between June and July 2014. Other callers reported that Nicholas Coffey was selling drugs from the home and he was being driven around by Jody Read in a gray-colored Toyota Corolla, according to police. Police stopped the car at 3:34 p.m. on July 22 after hearing that Elaine Coffey and Jody Read were picking up heroin to sell and use and would be traveling on Route 14.


Bonds for all three were set at $20,000 each for appearances Aug. 4 in Danielson Superior Court.
