South Korea gives up on Microsoft

South Korea is using the fact that Windows XP is no longer supported as a reason to walk away from Microsoft completely.

According to a government statement, South Korea wants to break from its Microsoft dependency and move to open source software by 2020"

In a statement the government said that it will invigorate open source software in order to solve the problem of dependency on certain software. The government has invested in Windows 7 to replace XP, but it does not want to go through the same process in 2020 when the support of the Windows 7 service is terminated.

Korea has a long way to go. So far it has not even bought in the standard e-document format which is widely seen as stage one.

However it seems that the government hopes to lean on the creation of a "local open source alternative" which basically means designing its own Linux fork.

Under the plan support will be provided so that it will be possible to freely connect to the Internet with all operating systems and browsers by 2017.

Starting next year the pilot open sources OS project will be carried out for 10 public and private institutions, and the expenses related to employee education and systems will be supported.

By 2018, the government is planning to review whether the introduction of open source software for PCs reduced expenses and institutionalise the result so that the open OS-related private project can be further expanded.

Right Decision. The more we depend on a billionaire the more exploitation we suffer.

South Korea is using the fact that Windows XP is no longer supported as a reason to walk away from Microsoft completely.

Reason or excuse???

What did South Korea expect Microsoft to do - nipple-suckle the ancient, dying (nay - slaughtered) XP for yet another decade? x3218mP.gif

Remember - supporting outdated, legacy hardware & software is a stumbling block that sets back advancement & progress which is a cross-subsidy that rests squarely on the (not-so-wide) shoulders of Users like me who paid through their bleeding noses to run modern equipment with the latest accessories & peripherals. RL8WwPy.gif

Now, what was South Korea so grumpy about and then, what is the excuse that they plan to submit the nation for the slower work-flow that open source is gonna curse them with. a3xYMgi.gif

And why was XP slaughtered ? because M$ has dollar signs in there eyes like always, so they stopped updating the worlds most used O/S.. Its fine that people update to newer windows if they chose too. But businesses are tired of having to pay out a ton of money update and re train all there employes over and over again for along time . So it was a matter of time tell whole countries started to backlash . Microsoft made there bed and now they can lay in . Trying force people to update so they can make more money .

Or maybe the advantage of the new Operating Systems are no use for their needs. RedHat should get the attention that it needs.

You take Linux Lite for example Its really nice for old computers and small laptops it even has a windows feel ..It dont come with crappy Microsoft apps like WMP and IE It comes with Firefox ,LibreOffice, VLC, Wine, Gimp and many more. I can see why they would want to make there own Open source O/S it will pay off in the long run.

Open source is fine when the impact is to be absorbed by individuals - however, when dictated to an entire nation's people, the retarded work-flow and productivity is a sure-fire prescription for the subsequent downfall of that country.

The above reference made to work-flow and productivity can only be comprehended by those who have actually used both Windows and open source on a personal level over a protracted period of time.

Windows XP was slaughtered because of Microsoft's greed and also due to its own growing limitations as far as compatibility is concerned. Can't blame Microsoft though, after having supported XP for an incredible 13 years (with the advent of the modern OS, XP had long out-lived its optimal utilization and thankfully monopoly.) :pope:

Businesses that persist with an insecure OS have only themselves to blame when their losses over-exceed by far, the cost they would have otherwise incurred upon upgrading to a more secure OS. They are not compelled to pay - nobody is and the best way to get Microsoft laid is simple . . . . . . . . . . just enroll to forums like nSane.

BTW, I am a Trainer for software and it takes but one single day's session to impart training on the finer nuances of a modern OS - the simple reason being, they are far more convenient, exhaustive and compliant when compared to the living undead XP.

I would have understood South Korea shifting loyalties given a valid reason - however, citing the Microsoft move to revoke support for XP is nothing short of an lame excuse.

The thing I dont like about Microsoft is they try to put a monopoly on what O/S you use.. And every computer Ive bought so I owned the windows and Ive bought windows many times . But to tell you the truth if they made more stuff for Linux .. I would just switch to Linux for good but still Microsoft holds a big monopoly on people still so most stuff is geared toward windows ..Tell you the truth I'm glad to see M$ starting to lose there grasp ..Even if Microsoft was to file bankruptcy Bill Gates has enough money he made to last him 4 life times ..from people like me.

To me Microsoft are no better than those people that make movies and music its all just a scam ..They hire all these groups (Anti Piracy trolls ) that say they want to or going to stop Piracy. If they stopped Piracy these groups would no longer even have jobs ..So if a better method of stopping is purposed they reject it ..Because stopping it is really the last thing they want to happen . Microsoft hires these same trolls to protect there software that dont want to really stop it . Its all about money ..I'm for free and open source a 110% ..That's why for along time that i find something free that's just as good i get rid of the shareware . If you have all this extra cash to spend on stuff that can be replaced by free stuff, you should take it and donate it to those who make it for free so people who are less fortunate can use it too.

Any monopoly dictated by any entity, be it Microsoft or even South Korea - can affect only Rookies who have absolutely no idea about how to surmount them. We, at nSane have always been successful at overcoming each and every devious move that was initiated, by Microsoft. Therefore I say, let them monopolize as much as they wish - as long as it fails to affect us adversely. Personally, I do admit to having an ulterior motive - my Clients grow more n00bish even as I laugh all the way to the bank (deserve that for my hard work.) Glad Bill Gates could never make even a single penny out of me - despite my leanings towards Windows.

As far as Linux is concerned, I am proud to announce here that in the first quarter of 2014, the MNC with whom I work, has killed thousands of Linux boxes and displaced the same with Windows 7 - proud because I am the Architect of this operation which was conducted on my personal recommendation, after a thorough review of each and every employee with due fingerprinting done against his/her productivity vis-à-vis man-hours and emolution/s.

BTW, Microsoft does not make stuff for Linux - that is done by hardware/software Developers/Vendors. Linux just does not have things going their way simply because they try to draw comparisons with Windows.

Even if we agree to the point that Microsoft is losing their grasp - their stranglehold is more than 75% of the OS market share whereas Linux stands at less than 2% for the last 23 years (this does not take into account the thousands of Linux boxes, killed - personally, by me.)

Not overly worried about what the Chinese are producing, really - not even about what is going on right now on Microsoft's devilish minds. Don't claim to purchase everything, either - however, I ensure that I manipulate most of my stuff before sharing the same on the CyberNet, at various forums. The stuff which I share is usually innovative without any patent/s attached - never have undertaken any project for self-glorification.

Wish I could say the same for Linux and its Users - especially about the sharing part. It is all very easy to inhibit affection for Open Source - only when folks start really using Linux for themselves, would they understand the finer points.

When I was a budding n00b, I was also jerking around with Open Source on my lips - today, Linux is nothing more than bragging rights.

I guess if that's what your paid to do you have to go were the money is there sure is no money in free so I understand this . If your not overly worried about what china does your not with reality though . The trade I done , my dad done and my grandfather done is gone from here now is all in china now at a cheaper price. I can go online and and buy a computer a whole lot cheaper than i bought back when they 1st made XP that is 4 times more powerful . I bought a new XP when windows 7 came out and they didn't even make XP new any more . You can just about buy anything you want if you have the money and is less expensive than it was say 10 years ago.
