Microsoft might have retired Windows XP, with much fanfare, it must be said, but the company still had to take care of a couple of issues here and there. One of them, rather severe.

An update that was recently released for the company’s very own antivirus and antimalware solution, Security Essentials, caused a lot of Windows XP computers to freeze after boot — a lot of, as in , a few thousands by most counts.

And now the software titan has released a new update to the security software in order to address all these problems. This is what the company has to say:

“This is due to an update that was shipped on April 15, 2014 that may have caused interrupted service for some customers using Microsoft security products. This was corrected via signature update, which automatically resolved the issue, and customers who have deployed the most recent signatures do not need to take any action.”

Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 users are recommended to deploy this new version, particularly those that were experiencing problems on these platforms.

In fact, as Redmond notes, the problems were not limited to these two operating systems.

Some other platforms are said to have been impacted as well, meaning users that rely on Security Essentials as the first line of defense on their machines should check out this important new update to the widely used application.

I realize MSE is a "set it and forget it" security solution, but boy, I had tons of problems updating it when I was using it. I have not used it in years. MBAM Premium and HitmanPro on demand works just fine.
