Android 4.4, also known as KitKat, is the most recent version of Google’s popular operating system, and it’s already shipping in several new devices around the world. But what about the 900 million or so Android devices that have been sold to date?

How do you know if your phone or tablet will get a sweet KitKat upgrade?

Here's a guide to the major manufacturers and their KitKat roadmaps so far.

Google

The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, will all receive the KitKat upgrade.

Motorola

Motorola is primed to show off the latest and greatest facets of Android and the new KitKat operating system. It’s no surprise then that they’ve got one of the clearer plans for finding out when your device will receive an upgrade to Android 4.4. The Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM processor powered Moto X, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini will all get upgraded to Android 4.4, though no official availability date has been set. As well, the Droid Razr M, Droid Razr HD, and Droid Razr Maxx HD all have the status of "future plan to come soon."

You can check for updated information by entering your device information on the Motorola's upgrade website.

HTC

If you're a subscriber on one of the four major U.S. carriers, your HTC One will receive the KitKat upgrade within the next 90 days. If you're using an unlocked or developer version of the handset, your HTC One will get an update in 30 days.

Samsung

Samsung has announced that the GALAXY S4 Google Play Edition will be upgraded "in the coming weeks." The venerable Galaxy Nexus, built in partnership with Google, will not receive an upgrade. Other device upgrade plans have yet to be announced.

Sony

Sony announced they will be first serving up Android 4.3 updates to most of their Xperia devices, with Android 4.4 upgrades to follow for the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and the Xperia Tablet Z.

LG

Nothing official has been announced for other LG devices. though other devices are likely to be upgraded including the LG G2.

I currently have an Nexus 4 with the below Kitkat Rom & Gapps ready to flash (running cm10.2 (4.3.1) atm), but given as it's not an official build (still alpha), reportedly dropping connections and such like, I'm gonna drop it on my low spec wildfire first when I get home from work, links below for anyone interested.

Full thread & Credits :-

To install, reboot into recovery, make backup ROM, wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, install Gapps, install SuperSU, and reboot. (If for some reason you end up in a bootloop, reboot into recovery, go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts & Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM.)

KitKat Rom :-

Gapps 4.4 :- (DO NOT USE OLDER 4.3 Gapps you will FC!!!)

SuperSU :- 1.65 (Needed to get full root)

How to Know if Your Device is READY for KitKat

Hardware

Android 4.4 KitKat may have been optimised to fully run among Android-powered devices with 512 MB of RAM and also means that if your device falls below it, you can only a fraction of the new OS or simply buy a new mid-range device.

Go 'Settings > Application > Running' to see the RAM size which should be at least 400 MB in total.

Network Carriers

You may need to inquire your network carrier for any possible updates but do not expect them to give every model an upgrade since their firmware are really coming from manufacturers. Network carriers modify firmware updates before getting pushed out which you should check constantly.

Manufacturer Updates

Don't forget to check updates inside your phone constantly using a Wi-Fi connection or do that via computer using their PC suites.

Go to 'Settings > About device > Software updates' to get the new update or via computer launching PC suites such as Kies for Samsung devices or PC Companion for Sony Xperia.

Timeline and Duration

Some manufacturers may not develop Android 4.4 KitKat for models which were released in 2012 especially if the models are classified as low-range or mid-level. Flagship models are the prioritised by companies due to marketing and selling point.

Custom ROM Developers

The most common source of Android OS upgrades are custom ROM developers and you may be lucky to get one from them.

Check CyanogenMod, Slim ROM, Omega ROM, Paranoid Android and others for any custom ROM upgrades. If your phone model received a higher OS version compared to its manufacturer, there is a good chance that Android 4.4 KitKat will be available for you.

The Moto X getting Android 4.4 in a Weeks time

The Moto X will receive the Android 4.4 KitKat update "in a matter of weeks". Motorola's presenters weren’t any more concrete than that.

The Moto X launched with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, which was mostly clean of maker customizations. The Moto G also launches with Android 4.3.

Its own 4.4 KitKat update will come in January next year.

This info was announced during the Moto G event

Android 4.4 KitKat is ready for HTC One Google Edition

big.jpg

HTC has officially announced that the Android 4.4 KitKat ROM for the smartphone has been fully developed and submitted to Google. It’s now up to the search giant to approve the code and start seeding it to the actual smartphones. It certainly shouldn’t take too long, although we haven’t been given a specific time frame.

Android 4.4 KitKat brings Project Svelte performance optimizations, bigger UI icons, removes the widgets from the app drawer and comes with the new Hangouts SMS/MMS/Gtalks unified hub. There’s also the new Email app, new Phone app with nearby search that should be coming to the HTC One GPE.

Samsung is yet to announce when the Galaxy S4 GPE gets the Android 4.4 KitKat treatment, but we are hoping the Koreans won’t take too long to release the update.

Android 4.4 KitKat Update For HTC One Release Date Confirmed

Android users around the globe rejoiced when Google announced that an additional array of smartphones would be benefiting from the KitKat update in the "coming weeks". Google took their usual stance of not going into any great detail regarding when specific hardware would be able to get the upgrade but it seems that weeks will actually be more like months for HTC One owners. Not exactly the longest wait that Android owners have had to endure, but still not exactly ideal for those itching to experience Android at its finest.

HTC confirmed its release schedule for Android 4.4 via a reply to a direct question through its HTC USA Twitter account. The tweet confirmed that North American HTC One owners will see the rollout of Android 4.4 to their devices by the end of January 2014 as an over-the-air update. In addition to the firmware update, users of the extremely popular One in the North American region will also be given an update to the on-device Sense software suite that will see it bumped to version 5.5.

android_mobile1.png

HTC’s Android 4.4 KitKat update schedule isn’t exactly the end of the world for users, considering we are fast approaching the end of the calendar year. When the 4.4 update is rolled out, it also looks like all HTC One owners on all North American networks will benefit from the process, meaning total coverage in one single swoop. That’s definitely some good news to take on board. On the flip side, users of other popular Android devices like the Moto X and Nexus 4 won’t have to wait at all, as the KitKat rollout will start momentarily.

10-reasons-One-RP3.jpg

Google’s latest iteration of the world’s most popular mobile OS is already available for the Moto X, which is hardly surprising considering they actually own Motorola Mobility. Certain users of the Nexus 4 are also reporting that the 4.4 update is starting to find its way through to their handset today. It isn’t just smartphone users who are waking up to find update goodness either. Those technology fanatics with a 7-inch Nexus 7 or a 10-inch Nexus 10 should also start to see KitKat being available for their hardware from today.

Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3 to get KitKat in January

A newly leaked schedule reveals which will be the first Samsung devices to get Android 4.4 KitKat. As you could expected the first to get the new Android version are this and last year flagships - Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 will get the KitKat treatment just two months from now - in January, 2014. The 2012 ex-flagships Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S III will be getting KitKat in March or April 2014.

gsmarena_001.jpg

The new Android 4.4 KitKat improves the UI performance thanks to its Project Svelte - the successor of Project Butter. This means all devices to be update with KitKat will become smoother and faster than ever, with even better multi-tasking and improved RAM management. We are sure Samsung will bring a few goodies to its TouchWiz UI, too.

There is no official confirmation on the roadmap and we can't verify if this document is indeed the real deal, so you should take this info with a healthy pinch of salt.
