The latest Firefox 23 has made the "Ask Search" the default Search Engine. but you can easily switch back to the "Google search"..

Here is how:

1) Launch firefox. Type "about:config" in the address bar without the quotation.

2) click enter..and then click.." I'll be careful, I promise!"

3) In the Search pane type "search".

4) Select 1 and right click--> Modify--> Type "Google" and click OK.

5) Select 2 and right click--> Modify--> Type "Google Search" and click OK.

yup, it looks like you would've ASK Toolbar installed in previous version..

FF would never ever in my opinion switch to pathetic adware Ask Search..

Ask.com is noted for a malware toolbar that can be surreptitiously bundled in with legitimate program installations (and change the default search engine too), and which generally cannot be removed from most common browsers once installed.

.....or just not install crappy bundled crap that take over your browser when installing software. Next time just pay attention to what is been installed.

I have to solve a problem with Firefox and a changed homepage. I've found a file in Firefox folder (at Program files) that solved that.

No Ask search engine here also.

I think you got it from somewhere else.

A good tool do remove this crap is Junkware Removal Tool & Adwcleaner.

But mine is Web Search. Even I remove it, it still appears on Firefox. Could anyone advise how to get rid of it and replace by google search? Many thanks!

Roger D : Thanks a lot for your valuable information and guidelines!

Above is my screenshot on my pc. I have removed Web Assistant and still Web Search still shows on Firefox.

Please advise any means to have Google Search enabled instead of Web Search. Many thanks!

  • Run a malware scanner like Malwarebytes or Super Antispyware.
  • Use Your Uninstaller to uninstall any unwanted apps (Set match level in settings to Average or Aggressive)
  • Uninstall any unwanted Firefox addons
  • Set search options back to default in about:config (Use google).
  • Clean Registry with CCleaner

If you still have problems make a backup of your bookmarks etc using MozBackup and unselect any settings/addons etc, Uninstall Firefox with Your Uninstaller, Clean registry with CCleaner and then re-instal Firefox and see if the default install still has the web search, if not then restore your bookmarks from backup using MozBackup.

Look 3 posts above - at post #17 - there is the right (and very simple) solution by Mozilla support .
