madeinheaven
Start Menu apps still work in Windows 8 Release Preview Despite a previous report that Microsoft was working hard to prevent applications that restore Start Menu functionality to Windows 8 by ripping out legacy code, apparently three of the top choices for such a task still work in the Release Preview. Forum member Jose_49 brings it to our attention that ViStart, Start8 and Classic Shell all still work in build 6.2.8400, and even provides the screenshots to prove it.ViStart working in the Release Preview......as is Start8......and Classic ShellSo, if you desperately require the Start Menu, or a similar sort of menu, back then it is still possible with one of these applications. They probably won't work come the RTM version of Windows 8, but for now you can still enjoy the combination of new and legacy Windows features. If you want to try one of these apps and you haven't as yet, the links to download them are below.→ Download ViStart → Download Start8 → Download Classic Shell[credit]

madeinheaven
Add Media Center to the Windows 8 Release PreviewSome of you already running the Windows 8 Release Preview will know by now that Media Center is not included by default, instead requiring a feature upgrade that will most likely come at a price once the Windows 8 RTM comes around. However for now, you can enable Media Center in Windows 8 through simply adding a new product key to your installation.Heading over to the Windows 8 FAQ provided by Microsoft reveals the steps that you'll need to gain the feature. However to save you time trying to find it, we've posted the steps needed below:Windows Media Center is not preinstalled in Windows 8 Release Preview. If you want to use Windows Media Center, you need to add it by following these steps:Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)Enter add features in the search box, and then tap or click Add features to Windows 8.Tap or click I already have a product key.Enter this product key: MBFBV-W3DP2-2MVKN-PJCQD-KKTF7 and then click Next.Select the checkbox to accept the license terms and then click Add features.Your PC will restart and Windows Media Center will now be on your PC and the tile will be pinned to the Start screen. It's as easy as that to get Media Center back on your Release Preview installation, although enjoy it while you can because it will not be free come the time for the full release. Also worthy of note is that this feature upgrade installs the necessary tools for DVD playback, which previously was only possible though third-party tools.[credit]

madeinheaven
“Windows cannot read the <ProductKey> setting from the unattend answer file.” I’ve seen a lot of people, including myself, get the following message when trying to use the easy install for Windows 7 to install Windows 8 CP. There is an easy fix. After you see this message, click “Ok” and power down the VM. Then go to the VM’s hardware settings and remove the floppy drive and then power on the VM. After you power on the VM, the Windows 8 CP setup proceeds normally. More info: blogs.vmware.com
