Thanks (downloading). The image can't just be mounted - it needs to be "converted into installation media stored on a DVD or a USB flash drive."?

WMplayer gives an error message about the key not to be used unattended. Dunno what that is about.

Start Menu apps still work in Windows 8 Release Preview

Despite a previous report that Microsoft was working hard to prevent applications that restore Start Menu functionality to Windows 8 by ripping out legacy code, apparently three of the top choices for such a task still work in the Release Preview. Forum member Jose_49 brings it to our attention that ViStart, Start8 and Classic Shell all still work in build 6.2.8400, and even provides the screenshots to prove it.

...and Classic Shell

So, if you desperately require the Start Menu, or a similar sort of menu, back then it is still possible with one of these applications. They probably won't work come the RTM version of Windows 8, but for now you can still enjoy the combination of new and legacy Windows features. If you want to try one of these apps and you haven't as yet, the links to download them are below.

Classic Shell 3.5.0

Posted Image

Classic Shell is a collection of features that were available in older versions of Windows but are removed from Vista and Windows 7. It has a classic start menu for Windows 7, it adds a toolbar for Windows Explorer and supports a variety of smaller features. There are 3 major components - Classic Explorer, Classic Start Menu and Classic IE9. Look here for the full list if features.
Classic Shell features:
  • Classic Start Menu for Windows 7, 8 (with skins)
  • Toolbar for Windows Explorer
  • Classic copy UI
  • Show file size in Explorer status bar
Classic Start Menu is a clone of the original start menu. It has a variety of advanced features:
  • Drag and drop to let you organize your applications
  • Options to show Favorites, expand Control Panel, etc
  • Shows recently used documents. The number of documents to display is customizable
  • Translated in 35 languages, including Right-to-left support for Arabic and Hebrew
  • Does not disable the original start menu in Windows. You can access it by Shift+Click on the start button
  • Right-click on an item in the menu to delete, rename, sort, or perform other tasks
  • The search box helps you find your programs without getting in the way of your keyboard shortcuts
  • Available for 32 and 64-bit operating systems
  • Has support for skins, including additional 3rd party skins
  • Fully customizable in both looks and functionality
  • Support for Microsoft’s Active Accessibility
  • Converts the “All Programs” button in the Windows menu into a cascading menu (Vista and Windows 7)
  • Implements a customizable start button for Windows 8
  • And last but not least – it's FREE!
Classic Explorer is a plugin for Windows Explorer that:
  • Adds a toolbar to Explorer for some common operations (Go to parent folder, Cut, Copy, Paste, Delete, Properties, Email). The toolbar is fully customizable
  • Replaces the copy UI in Vista and Windows 7 with the more user-friendly “classic” version similar to Windows XP
  • Handles Alt+Enter in the folder panel of Windows Explorer and shows the properties of the selected folder
  • Has options for customizing the folder panel to look more like the Windows XP version or to not fade the expand buttons
  • Can show the free disk space and the total file size in the status bar
  • Can disable the breadcrumbs in the address bar
  • Fixes a long list of features that are broken in Windows 7 – missing icon overlay for shared folders, the jumping folders in the navigation pane, missing sorting headers in list view, and more
Classic IE9 is a plugin for Internet Explorer 9 that:
  • Adds a caption to the title bar so you can see the full title of the page
  • Shows the security zone in the status bar
  • Shows the loading progress in the status bar
What's new in this version:
  • Added support for Windows 8 Consumer Preview
  • Added customizable start button
  • Added a Metro skin for the start menu
  • Updated all settings for Windows 8
  • Fixed the missing caption in IE10
  • Added a setting to control the menu shadows
  • Added toolbar commands to map and disconnect network drives
  • Improved the responsiveness of the check for a new version
  • The check for new version is a separate component that can be skipped during install

Try this: Open VM Menu > Settings > select Floppy Drive > Remove > OK. This should solve the problem. :)

@madeinheaven: Something that brings Windows 7's start menu back in Windows 8? I know about the one made by Stardock, but I'm looking at options.

found a simple registry hack to get the metro to work on a netbook (1024x600).

look for display overscan, and set it to 1, reboot and change the settings to 1024x768 and the metro works like a charm

Add Media Center to the Windows 8 Release Preview

Some of you already running the Windows 8 Release Preview will know by now that Media Center is not included by default, instead requiring a feature upgrade that will most likely come at a price once the Windows 8 RTM comes around. However for now, you can enable Media Center in Windows 8 through simply adding a new product key to your installation.
Heading over to the Windows 8 FAQ provided by Microsoft reveals the steps that you'll need to gain the feature. However to save you time trying to find it, we've posted the steps needed below:

Windows Media Center is not preinstalled in Windows 8 Release Preview. If you want to use Windows Media Center, you need to add it by following these steps:

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.)
  • Enter add features in the search box, and then tap or click Add features to Windows 8.
  • Tap or click I already have a product key.
  • Enter this product key: MBFBV-W3DP2-2MVKN-PJCQD-KKTF7 and then click Next.
  • Select the checkbox to accept the license terms and then click Add features.
Your PC will restart and Windows Media Center will now be on your PC and the tile will be pinned to the Start screen.

It's as easy as that to get Media Center back on your Release Preview installation, although enjoy it while you can because it will not be free come the time for the full release. Also worthy of note is that this feature upgrade installs the necessary tools for DVD playback, which previously was only possible though third-party tools.

“Windows cannot read the <ProductKey> setting from the unattend answer file.”

I’ve seen a lot of people, including myself, get the following message when trying to use the easy install for Windows 7 to install Windows 8 CP.

Posted Image

There is an easy fix. After you see this message, click “Ok” and power down the VM. Then go to the VM’s hardware settings and remove the floppy drive and then power on the VM. After you power on the VM, the Windows 8 CP setup proceeds normally.

Yup, this is RC. Official release would be around November (+/- a month). But, RTM will release and leak to public around September.
