tezza
Samsung has announced a next-generation microSD memory card offering high speed data transfer for use in Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile handsets and tablets. While still uncommon in the UK, where high-speed LTE mobile broadband networks are undergoing small-scale trials, other countries have already made the leap. LTE networks boast significantly improved data rates, in some cases equalling or beating those of wired broadband technologies like ADSL. For a mobile handset to keep up with an LTE network running at peak capacity, high-speed storage devices are required - and it's this market Samsung is hoping to address with its latest memory card. Based around the Ultra High Speed-1 (UHS-1) standard, Samsung's new microSD memory cards boast a maximum sequential read speed of around 80MB per second - almost four times faster than the current market leaders at 21MB per second. The speed boost is a combination of the UHS-1 high-speed interface and Samsung's latest-generation 20nm 64Gb toggle DDR 2.0 memory chips, providing the technology required for high-speed storage. As well as LTE data streaming, the extra speed will come in handy on devices which support high-resolution burst-mode photography or Full HD 1080p video recording. "MicroSD cards with a UHS-1 interface offer users an extremely high level of performance on their LTE smartphones and for other advanced mobile applications. This allows consumers to enjoy high-quality images and video playback directly from the memory cards, which fully support the advanced performance features of diverse digital gadgets", claimed Samsung's Wanhoon Hong at the announcement. "Our UHS-1 card demonstrates how Samsung plans to continually expand its line-up of memory cards in accommodating the market need for higher densities and greater performance." Production of the new memory cards has already begun, with Samsung concentrating on a 16GB capacity version to start with higher capacities due in the near future. Pricing has yet to be confirmed. http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/memory-cards/1291606/samsung-goes-high-speed-with-new-uhs-1-microsd-cards
