Marko Ahtisaari, the design chief for Nokia, has confirmed in an interview that he is spending a lot of time working on an upcoming tablet but stopped short of saying it was based on Windows 8.

There's been rumors and talk for months now that Nokia has been working behind the scenes on a new tablet that would run Microsoft's Windows 8 OS. One rumor just a few days ago said the tablet would ship in the fourth quarter of 2012. Now Nokia's own design chief has confirmed at least part of those rumors.

Reuters reports that in an interview with Finnish magazine Kauppalehti Optio, Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari that he was "working on" some kind of tablet device. However, Ahtisaari stopped short of saying that the tablet would be running Windows 8.

The interview does quote Ahtisaari as saying that he is spending about a third of his time helping to create the tablet product which he said will stand out from all the other tablets that are currently competing with Apple's iPad line.

Even if Ahtisaari wouldn't confirm that the tablet was running Windows 8, it would be a big surprise if Nokia wasn't going to release a tablet product without a Microsoft operating system. Nokia has put nearly all of its smartphone eggs into the Windows Phone basket so it's unlikely that any tablet the company would make would be based on Android or any other OS.
