Samsung promised it would provide an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for its Galaxy S II handset - and one branch of the company has confirmed that the first updates will begin on 15 March.

We’ve been waiting for several weeks now for Samsung to announce when it will be releasing its promised Android 4.0 update for the Galaxy S II. Now, finally, the company has made its first official confirmation, albeit via slightly circuitous means.

The news comes from the official Facebook page of Samsung Mobile Israel (via Android Central), which stated that Ice Cream Sandwich will roll out there on 15 March. The post reads:

We promised we were working on it. You waited patiently. And on 15 March, it will arrive: Android version 4, ICS, to tens of thousands of Galaxy S II devices purchased from cellular companies in the country or directly from us. We are very excited for the launch, hope you are too :)

Of course, that applies specifically to handsets in Israel, and there’s no guarantee that owners in other markets will see their devices updated on the same date, but it’s reassuring to have official word that the update will soon be distributed to the first wave of end users.

A few days ago, tech blogger and Samsung aficionado Eldar Murtazin tweeted that the company has had Galaxy S II ICS update ready since 21 February, and claimed that the only thing delaying release of the update is the wait for approval from Google to push the update out.
